I'm still not buying that the Trials race has to be in warm weather because the Olympics will be in warm weather. Make the Trials the year before the Olympics then so everyone has been doing their training in the heat. It's ridiculous to expect everyone coming from cold areas of the country without the same benefits NOP has to perform well. I think that the top-3 on each side can spend their time from the Trials until the Olympics training for the heat. Why put athletes through that twice in a span of 5-6 months. And it should be noted that a lot of the top-3 in 2016 took some serious time off after the Olympic games- no fall marathons, some DNS action in the spring, injuries, some sub-par performances.
The 2012 Trials were great in Houston, giving so many athletes the opportunity to run fast. It's rare that you get to line up all of your best athletes for one race. In 2016, only 18 (out of 108) men ran under the B standard that got them there, 40 women under 2:45 (out of 149).
49 guys under 2:19 in 2012, 78 women 2:45 or better in Houston. Stop it with this the Trials are just to pick the best team possible and to simulate Tokyo conditions- great let's go to Tokyo summer of 2019 and run a race with the top-5 men and women on a track. I want to see a bunch of 2:15-19 guys and 40-45 women have a shot to put together a good race together at the trials. That crowd can be a lot more inspiring than a Rupp type.
