Poor little fella. Playing a victim and hating are two different things. You have know idea what you are even talking about once again.

I think he'll get the 2:19, he'll be closer to sea level. I do agree that ultras did have an effect on his speed to some degree, but I'm sure he'll manage to pull it off despite a handful of questionable workouts.
Like he said, it's going to be very close; I think he needs to be more patient and get an even longer training block in; even race some 10k's or maybe even a half to get his speed fully back even though he's gotten a decent amount of it back already. He's in good shape, he did 2x8k in 25:50 with 5 minute rest which seemed like a nice tempo effort, and 5x1600m in around low 4:50's with 3 minute rest and it wasn't a ball-busting effort according to him
I think he has the ability to qualify, but I don’t know if he’ll be mentally strong enough to do it. If he can not think and just put himself in a lot of pain and stay there without getting all flaky about it, he can run 2:17:xx.
2:20
this would be good for him because he is not a road runner anymore

Wow, are you a complete idiot.
Why is this even worthy of discussion? You guys are giving an over/under on a sub-sub-elite marathon time.
2:19:xx
close but he will not make it.
He will post a very detailed video analysis of what went wrong while drinking a beer.
Then he will go back to ultras (hopefully fast races, not another UTMB fiasco).
He's training at 5300ft
Remember that

I predict that he doesn't run as fast as he did when he was with the Hansons. Ever.
Yes of course. He will never run as fast for a HM or marathon as he did with Hansons but running fast is not his goal. IT IS IMAGE. While he was with Hansons he was the 10th best guy on the team. He wants people to view him differently than that. So he peaked as an athlete during his Hansons years, but we all talk about him more now and that is the goal.
I really, really hope he gets his OTQ.
Honestly have no idea why all the hate on here. He's a nice guy, puts himself out there, honest about his goals and his failures and is trying to make a living in the sport we all love. Not smug, arrogant.
Seriously, best of luck to him.

Why? What would his presence at the trials provide? Do you think he would make the team? Do you think the experience would give him a better chance of making a later Olympic Team?
I think he qualifies. Sage has the speed and the experience for it.
And it's not ultras that sap speed from a runner's legs but lack of speed training and specificity.

in total he has done many marathons over 10 years and only twice gone under 2;19
Around 2.22 ... Weather is going to be horrible. Extremely cold and windy

This is such a jaded response. Most of the runners at the trials have no chance at the team, but an OTQ is a great goal in and of itself. Should we just run half a dozen guys and see who the top 3 are?
If he had a better sponsor (Nike) and had better shoes (4%), he might have a shot.

+1 If the Trials is only about making the team, put the top 5-10 men and women on a track. If Sage makes the Trials with a 2:18, he'll give hope to everyone under 2:25 to keep working at it. There's value to that. Sage is also very public so you can see what it takes the run what he has run. I get more inspired from the 2:18 men or 2:44 women that work full time and complete a lifelong dream than a pro with no personality that keeps their training a secret.
