I find it very difficult to believe that this guy was making real money coaching, what with the flood of far more reputable sites headed by known quantities.
For one thing, his site is a mess. (I realize that it may have changed in the past day or two; I'd never heard of Kelly Agnew before this.) When I clicked on "About Us," I expected to learn details about his background. Instead, it just says "Wether you're an aspiring trail runner, marathon runner or just need to get back in shape, I can customize a plan for you, focused on nutrition and effective lifestyle change that will have proven results." That generic blather offers nothing, zilch, about his credentials. And, come on now -- "wether"?
His "Sign Up" page doesn't even quote prices; it's just a standard PHP-style e-mail form.
He lists his blog URL as
www.slippingslowlyintopain@blogspot.com
" target="_blank" class="embedly-card">
www.slippingslowlyintopain@blogspot.com
. I mean, that's close, but not even clickable.
He doesn't even say what his background is (did I mention that yet?), only that he started running to lose weight. Yet he positions himself as a coach in every area of life imaginable -- running, eating, weights, lifestyle, even happiness.
He focuses on ultras. That makes him more likely to be a cheater simply because of the increased potential for cheating in most longer events. (Sorry, upstanding ultra runners, but scummy people do exploit the inherent weaknesses of the multi-loop or super-wide-open courses your events are more or less forced to include for logistical reasons.)
On top of all of that, he says he's a vegetarian. Folks, while there are lots of upstanding and trustworthy vegans and vegetarians out there, the ones who brag about it, especially in the context of other indicators, are usually idiots.
His tattoos also suck.
So basically, this guy's DORQ ( Dishonest Online Runner Quotient) is through the roof:
* Ugly, sloppy website
* No background details
* Half-literate
* No prices or specific plans quoted
* Latecomer to running
* Use of "we" too refer to only himself
* "Life coach" type who claims to be a comprehensive adviser
* Vegetarian
* Ultramarathon focus
* Shitty tattoos
He's maybe a 96.4 out of 100, so it was virtually assured that he would turn out to be a cheater, loon, or both.
