Hey OP you accudentky wrote the number 9 upside down in the thread title. I believe you meant to write , “Rupp is a ‘2:09 guy’”....which is an accurate and factual statement.

If he ran Berlin, I believe he'd drop a 2:05. Put me down for a YES.

Yes because Todd Williams was a 2:07 guy and Marc Nenow a 2:05 guy back in the day.

He has almost identical PR's to Kipchoge on the track and we have all long known that the Marathon would be Rupp's best event. I think he will have equivalent dominance over previous Americans like he did in the 10k. I think he is capable of something in the high 2:04/low 2:05 range though I don't think he will ever run the time as he is annoyingly tactical. I think it takes a couple fast marathon attempts to get it down (with obvious exceptions) and I don't think he will make more than 1 or 2 attempts at running fast for the rest of his career.

He's as much of a 2:06 guy as am I. We both have never broken 2:09.

I don't call someone an "x" guy until he's run that time, but I think your question is whether or not Rupp is capable of running 2:06, which I think the answer is pretty clearly "yes".

True. However, those things don't make a 2:09 guy any faster.

I loathe attempts to convert times based on course, weather, or other PRs. I understand people want to convert from altitude or maybe convert sprint times based on wind speed, but saying that someone's 4:01 mile is easily equivalent to a 3:59 since he ran a 65 first lap, or it was windy, or his shoelace was untied, or he's also run 1:46 and 7:48 drive me crazy.

Rupp might knock out a 2:05 one day. Or he might win more marathons with times that enable him to win. I'm a fan and I think he's one of the greatest runners American has ever produced. But this obsession with claiming he's a "this time guy" based on other times are ridiculous.

Hmm if Rupp was a 2:06 guy does that mean everyone else gets to take off 3-4 minutes? I never ran a really fast 10k with other competition. I would like to consider myself a 27:00 guy for the 10k then.

The reality is until he runs it. He is what he is until he goes faster. People don't get rewarded for unfulfilled potential.
