I have very little money but really need a car that is somewhat dependable. What is the least amount of money I can spend to acquire such a car? Any suggestions on what to get?

Two to three grand. Look for old trucks/cars from estate/retirees. Usually you can get something old and dependable but less than 100,000 miles for that price. Kepp looking, it will probably take 2 months of looking to find it.
Get one and put a glock in it.

Thanks. Bloody hell I've been searching for 2 weeks and haven't found much under $4k. But I'll keep looking.
My old roommate fixed ford contours (last realeased around 2000) and usually sold them rebuilt for 2 to 4 grand. When I was looking 4 years ago my parents found a 1999 dodge truck (their smaller version) for 3 grand. If you don't want to spend a lot of time looking you should be able to find something immediate in the 4 to 5k range.
It probably also depends on your location. I am only familiar with cheap areas in the southeast your mileage in more expensive regions of the country may vary. Especially in the north where the salt on the road causes corrosion problems in the vehicles.

90s Honda or Toyota, $1-2k will get you great condition.
I posted this link a few weeks ago. It has good advice:

A 25 year old car isn't worth s hit. I don't care if it's Japanese. But it for $1k, and 1 month later pay $2 - $3k for repairs/tuneup.
Get a road bike quit your job and start a vegan cycling channel on YouTube where you tell people to carb up and eat lots of sugar.

And make running videos about how if you have two working legs and can't run under 20 mins for a 5k on your first try, then you're a fat slob.

Hey...I hear the chicks are starting to dig this kind of a gig. ?
Lease the car if you can afford a payment plan. That way you won't have to spend a chunk right away.

There are these websites called Cars.com and Autotrader. You can get a new one for under 10k, maybe under 9k. And that’s new. Get a used one still under warranty and easily could get one cheaper.
If you want something with a better warranty, look at the Kia Rio or Hyundai Accent.
Remember, that you can buy these cars for very little down payment, if any at all, and get a low payment plan or lease. They are so cheap that monthly payments can easily be under $200.

They like my '72! Going to look at another one this week actually.
To the OP: check out Scions too. You can usually find a stylish Scion from 05-09 with less than 80k miles in great shape for under $5k. Maintenance is cheaper on these subcompact cars (tires, brakes, etc) than others. I just did a "search all Craigslist" for a Scion xB. This just popped up in LA and would be perfect for you.
