I once brought my shoe bag to a HM and when I got there, I realized I had brought my XC spikes by accident. The only other option were the loafers I wore to the event, so it was the XC shoes or nothing. I took the spikes out (obviously) and did the race. I ran 1:18:46, which was actually within a minute of my PR at the time. My feel did hurt a little afterwards.

....errrr, hurt. -
If go with Sprint spikes. The course is a lot softer than you think and the carbon fiber plate in the zoom superfly will hold up over 26 miles. A spike designed for the power output of manly studs is what you need.

Been in love with my XC spikes since HS....always brought me good luck

You wore loafers? To a race? If you had said crocs or flip flops...OK. but loafers? W-t-f?

vics are not aggressive enough, go for a pair of super flys to keep you on your toes. the stiffer your calves to better. if you let them stretch out too much over the course of the marathon you lose power output. think rubber bands stretch it too much and you either break it or you cant stretch anymore
stiff as a rod -

Over the course of probably 1000 road races in my lifetime, I've not once shown up NOT in running shoes (since that's the concept), then sometimes change into 'faster' shoes. A time or two I've brought the wrong 'fast' shoes, but I still have running shoes on.
WHAT THE HELL are you doing going to a half, wearing loafers, carrying your shoes in a bag? Who carries road race shoes in a bag? Are you okay or what? -

Okay, I'm getting pushback on this one, so I need to explain. :)
I won a little Saucony zip-up bag to hold shoes at a race, and started using it for a little while for the novelty. As far as the loafers go, the race was a night race and I went straight there from work, with my shoes (in the shoe bag) and run kit in a knapsack. I changed when I got there.
As for me being okay, that's another question! -

Could have been a night race, but crocs? No, just no. There is no good excuse to ever wear crocs, let alone own a pair. -
If you're not going to win, why would you wear a shoe called "Victory"....or is getting a shirt and finisher medal "winning" to you?

Victory's what?

Either is fine actually, but run on your toes and install a wheel in the heel (a-la "Wheelies" shoe)
so you can glide the downhills and save your quads. Flashing LEDs is a bonus. -

I find that acceptable.
Sometimes I wear slip on Skechers or Hush Puppie loafers if its a long drive to the race.
Yeesh, the critics here are brutal. -
My kids first road race was a 1-mile when he was 8. He worked his way past all the fat little sprinters and then caught the leader(a big 12 year old) with 300 to go and outkicked him by about a second in 7:03 to 7:04. He was pretty proud of it until he saw the pictures of the finish and the big kid was wearing a pair of camo crocs. Still makes me laugh thinking about it.

I prefer the mambas

Well, back in '79 I saw a chap running a 1/2 marathon wearing kung-fu shoes, the ones with brown sole. He ran mid 1:17

He was ahead of his time, they're just a combo of toe-shoes and minimal-tread shoes.
