The most appropriate analogy for the Boston-NYC relationship is the elevator scene in Mad Men where the kid tells Draper "I feel bad for you" and he immediately responds "I don't think about you at all".

People in New York have such a strange superiority complex. Nobody's thinking about your city, guy. It's fine, but I wouldn't want to live there.
Boston has an excellent running community, so-so running (but much easier to access than other large cities), very good jobs for scientists and engineers, and is close enough for quick ski trips or hikes in NH or VT. Housing costs are out of control, though, and I really don't know how poor people manage to live here. Those rising costs are also pushing out artists, musicians, and cool businesses, similar to what's happening in New York and San Francisco.
So to sum up, it's a fine city that gets too much hate and has bad pizza.
