i have virtually no savings but I wouldn't lose my house if i lost my job since I could make payments and feed myself on a part time minimum wage job. Learning to live cheap is almost as effective as saving.
I blow all my money on travel, personal pursuits, and time off.
In my view, money in my 30's is worth exponentially more than money in my 80's, so when I have sufficient money saved up I quit my job and travel or just enjoy life for awhile and then when i run out of money I go and get another job.
A lot of this obsession with retirement savings seems to be fear driven. Life's going to suck when you're 85 and dying, whether you are broke or not. Just accept it and enjoy the rest of your life.
