Decent job security though--there's one other person at my company who does what I do, and she does it worse, slower, and for more money (because she's been there longer). If they let her go I could easily do her job and mine; if they let me go they would need to hire 1-2 people to take my place. So until they lay her off I think I'm safe.
I was in the same boat as you, but had solid savings and my employer needed 2-3 people to fill my job. I did my work faster and better, that was my fallback. Guess what? Everyone liked me, except one grumpy, divorced, frustrated man - my boss. I was let go, with severance, and they hired 3 people to take my job. All is well, as I found another job and double dipped for a while. Highest earning year ever, even with a month off on thier dime.
