Still my favorite runner.
I think that was Patti Catalano (Lyons) singing happy birthday to him. One of my favorite female runners. (Just behind Joan Benoit Samuelson)

I really do miss the days when successful races and fast times were due to hard work. No suspicion. No anonymous fools calling out every performance.
Those days really were better.
Guys like Bill Rodgers raced all the time and the sport was popular because they were in the public eye.
You were one of my first hero's- you, Pre, Ryan, Liquari, Shorter, Viren.
Happy Birthday!!!!

... I think one of the reasons I love the photo because of all the kids riding their bikes beside you. Boston must have been great back then when this type of scene was possible.
It was.

Nearly 30 years ago he set masters record in Manchester on thanksgiving and I raced the last three miles with him. He gave me credit on a television interview and it made my day. Happy birthday Bill!

I would put 28 sub-2:15s above 100 sub-4 miles. I wonder where Yuji is on this one?
Last time I've checked Kawauchi's numbers:
50 sub 2:15
38 sub 2:13
Probably a few more nowadays.
does it make him a better runner than Bill?
guess not
Am I correct that these were the shoes Steve Prefontaine sent to Bill Rodgers? I know the accompanying letter was hanging in the Faneuil Hall store and on the store website. Sadly, it is no longer at either location. 1975 was a pivotal year in American running.

Happy birthday, Bill. I have a clipping of this photo, beside my computer, of you stopping mid-race to tie your shoes on the way to setting an AR. I don't know why, but I really like the photo. I see it before almost every run I do. You are an inspiration to us all.

Granted, Mr. Rodgers ran 59 marathons which, while impressive, doesn't compare to Dane Rauschenberg completing 52 marathons in one calendar year.
This is just silly. Rogers (and any number of runners) who ran/run almost a marathon/day in training could easily have done this.
Happy Birthday William, Bill, Will, Willha, Billy. It's been great ride for you.

Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
Clayton Murphy is giving some great insight into his training.
