RIP vladimir!
RIP vladimir!
They probably didn't specify WHOSE lifetime the subscription would be tied to.

I have noticed it going downhill for a while, but a lot in the last few months or so. There was an article on things that runners should buy - and it included a running themed bracelet. That combined with the article on how to do your makeup for a race just sent me over the edge. I won't renew my subscription.
I am still upset that Running Times no longer exists. Is the audience for that type of magazine really that low? It had a great combo of pro running news and training advice.
I wasn’t aware of a time when Runner’s World was worth reading. It’s been lowest common denominator garbage for some time.

Your subscription must vest, if at all, not later than 21 years after a life in being at the creation of your subscription.

Maria Rodale is a nut-job, and Rodale publications have always been vehicles of dubious "health" advice and pushers of pseudo-scientific info on food and nutrition.
Fixed that for you.

It's morphed into an everyday fitness mag for women.

“A story of screaming kids, crying adults, frayed family ties, and one very unusual 5k”? Who wants to read that stuff!?

I was going to make this joke.

I was receiving Runners World way back when it was Distance Running News and at some point (I think it was in late 60's or early 70's) I bought a "lifetime subscription. Well now it has expired. I've tried contacting RW with no reply. Has anyone else has this problem? Any suggestions?
I have the opposite problem. I tried to cancel my nearly-free 4 year subscription a few months ago but it just keeps coming. I don't need any makeup tips or running bracelets. I too miss Running Times.
I could have applied for the lifetime subscription in the early 1970's, but each issue had the feeling of deja vu. Same old, same old. I picked up one current issue and I didn't recognize it. More of a trendy magazine. I have had my Track and Field News subscription for over 30 years.

I still have the subscription card that reads $100 for lifetime with no expiration date. Called them on it last year, simply to see their reaction. They offered 4 years at $10 a piece.
Thanks for all the input. I did also enjoy Running Times and for the really old running geeks Long Distance Log. You couldn't complain about the articles- there wasn't any- page after page of results. How about Racing South? I'm sure there are many others I forgot.

I missed Long Distance Log. I actually didn't know it existed until right before it closed down. But I've been catching up now that it's archived on the internet. There is an article here and there. Cerutty sent a few letters.
Runner's World "Main Headlines" every month for the last 10 years:
January: New Year, New You!
February: Run Your Best Half Marathon
March: Run Your Best Full Marathon
April: Run Your Fastest 5k
May: Lose 5 Pounds in 5 Days
June: Beat The Heat
July: Top Food Dishes for Runners
August: Get in Shape in 3 Weeks!
September: Run Your Best (or First!) 26.2
October: 12 Weeks To Fit
November: Get Ready for Your Fastest 5k
December: Year End, New You!
It seriously never changed.
I'm not a computer expert so I was unaware LDL was on the internet. I have some copies from 1965, but I think it started several years before that. If I remember correctly coach Campbell told me that LDL was just an offspring on a journal that Browning Ross took up. Campbell had predicted the success Amby Burfoot at Boston.
A link to LDL for those interested:

It's fascinating stuff.
I noticed results from handicapped races where people were given handicaps like golf. The Dipsea Race still does this but I can't think of any others. It might be something to for local running clubs to think about bringing back and use a handicap instead of age categories.
How the hell would RW know if a lifetime subscriber died?
My dad purchased a lifetime subscription. He says that every now and then the magazines will stop showing up and he has to call and remind them that he's still alive.
Several people have killed themselves in order to stop that garbage from showing up.

40 years from now, if not sooner, this is what letsrun’s home page will look like
Rodale sold RW recently, so that may be where your subscription was killed off
