Why the hell were they flying in a DC3? Even in the 70's that thing was ancient. No wonder they crashed.
The DC3 was a workhorse. I flew in one in the Carribean in the late 90s. I'd bet there are still some in service.
Here is the DC 3 Southern Illinois University had in the 70's and 80's for athletic trips. Our track team used it a few times a year. Thanks to Mr Glover for keeping this old bird in the air!

my HS coach was a member of that team, and the only reason she wasnt on the plane was that she was from wisconsin and just drove home after the meet for the holidays rather than fly back to Ames. Such a tragedy, she still had a hard time talking about it even 20 years later.
The crash took place when I was a senior in college. It was huge news at the time, a horrible tragedy.
I always wondered why they were flying such a short distance. They should have just taken a bus. Per google maps, it is only 186 miles from U of Evansville to Middle Tennessee State U. By flying, they had to drive 7 miles to the airport, probably by bus, load everything from the bus to the plane, fly to Nashville, load everything from the plane to another bus, then drive the remaining 36 miles to MTSU. They did all that to effectively save only 143 miles.
Besides going through all that to save 143 (x2) driving miles, they had to arrange four bus trips plus two flights instead of one bus to MTSU and one bus home.
I was a senior in HS in 1987 when the Chicago Tribune ran a huge story about the Evansville plane crash 10 years later. I cut it out of the paper and saved it and read it every few years when rummaging through old stuff. Hope this link works; its a worthwhile read:

You realize the Air Force is still using B52s built in the 1950s

You realize that they only have 76 left out of 744 built right? There's a reason for that.
