First time I’ve heard of this story but surprised there’s never been a movie or more information.

I am old enough to remember that. It was pretty shocking. I was a big college basketball fan around that time and Evansville stuck out for the name, The Aces.
Not everything makes for a good movie.
Those teams with Sloan were pretty awesome. The plane crashed just a mile and a half from our house. You can go to the site and still find watches and such.
They started a golf tournament in honor of the coach, Bobby Watson. Watching the TV one night I heard sportscaster Mike Blake say, "It is a fitting tribute to a man who made such a tremendous impact on the tri-state area."
I choked on my drink.
Marshall University football plane crash November 14, 1970. I think there is a movie on that tragedy.
One person was not on the plane but died two weeks later.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Indiana_Flight_216Two weeks after the crash, the only member of the basketball team who was not on the DC-3 was killed after being hit by a drunk driver, leaving all of the members of the 1977 Purple Aces Basketball team dead.
final destination might have gotten the story idea from this...truly bizarre
Happened to a khl hockey team about 5 years ago too
I grew up in Southern Illinois and that team had a few guys from the area. Most noticeable was Mike Duff from Eldorado, IL. Was just a freshman on that team and was scoring over 20 points a game. He was a great high school player and had Larry Bird type skills. Sad story!
32 years ago plane crash in Des Moines - killed several from ISU women's xc team.....

It's tragic, but nothing to make a movie about.
I just watched "Alive" the other night on a DVD that I checked out from the library. That was worth a movie (or two, and several books). An airplane with a Uruguayan rugby team crashed on glacier in the Andes in 1972; about 28 people of 45 survived after the first day; the airplane couldn't be located, so the search was called off; the survivors had to start eating the dead; two finally hiked out to civilization after more than 2 months and in the end, 16 survived.

The Aces just lost a young broadcaster to a car accident. 29yr old mike radomski. Tragic accident. Crazy history for one school's athletic department.
Correction: he was working at UCF, having left Evansville prior.
Why the hell were they flying in a DC3? Even in the 70's that thing was ancient. No wonder they crashed.
Thank you for your sensitivity.

Too soon?
Pretty tragic story to say the least. Two of the players happen to be from my hometown, Eldorado, IL. in senior Kevin Kingston and frosh Mike Duff, so our small town of 4,000+/- was really hit hard and still mourns those two to this day. Our gymnasium is now called the Duff-Kingston Memorial Gymnasium. Most of my family still reside there. My parents, aunts, and uncles were all schoolmates with Mike Duff and Kevin Kingston. My mom and uncle were classmates with Duff, and my dad and uncle played on teams with both players. Forty years later it’s still probably the most heart-wrenching event to ever hit our small town. Kevin Kingston’s father (Don) was a teacher at Eldorado HS until at least the mid/late 90’s. Duff was a superstar in the 70’s...scoring over 2500 pts and leading Eldorado to three straight Elite 8 appearances and a 2nd finish in 1976. Duff still holds the IHSA record for most career tournament points at 252 points. He originally signed with Missouri but decided to attend Evansville (only 50 minutes from m Eldorado) who was joining the DI basketball ranks after multiple DII titles. At only 18 years old he was averaging 20.2 points/9.5 rebounds in the four collegiate games he played (one against Indiana State and Larry Bird and anther against '78 NCAA runner-up DePaul with D. Corzine). He had the tools to be a great college player...and possibly beyond. To this day people who knew him and saw him play still wonder what could’ve been.

You realize the Air Force is still using B52s built in the 1950s
