Lucky guy, there’s people out there 50 years younger hwo train like dogs and aren’t as fast. Blessed and inspirational. I hope I’m running even 8:30 miles at his age.

Sounds like maybe he is doing high rep low weight and body weight stuff every morning for 30-40 minutes and one day a week of heavy lifting? Like a circuit training event focus on range of motion and hips every morning , That would have a lot of aerobic maintenance benefit and be about as taxing as a moderate run. More slow twitch, perhaps and the fast twitch work in the once a week heavy session? All periodized right it could be pretty solid.

No, actually it's got *nothing* to do with anything you said. *Nothing* to do with 'writing differently for different occasions.'

It has *everything* to do with the fact that most Americans --because they no longer bother to *read* anything but social media posts, and most of those are written by other ignorant folks (like you, perhaps?)-- no longer know that the participle of 'run' is 'run,' not 'ran.'

They similarly no longer know that the participle of 'go' is 'gone,' not 'went,' or that 'could of' has nothing to do with actual English, and makes no sense whatsoever.

Hence, they constantly utter Pidgin-English sh*t like 'he could of went,' or 'she hasn't ran at all this week' --like about two thirds of the guys on this board do.

You can argue about how *important* all that is, if you like, but your argument that they're *choosing* to say those things --even though they know the difference-- because of the colloquial context, is laughably stupid.

They (and you?) say those things because they *don't* know the difference, because they don't read anything even semi-literate.

I could weight train and cross train all day long but it would not move the needle for me. If I can run more I will race better. Of course that is the big if. I am endurance built not strength built.

Gene was ahead of Gary in the 1500 by 1 second, 50 seconds in the 5k and 5 minutes in the 10k. Totally different training by Gene - high mileage, much in the 7.30 to 8 minute range. Surprising that he beat Gary in the 1500.

So, just food for thought, as much as we worry about body fat , i think the strength can be important as we get older because we still have to move pretty much the same amount of bones as we ever had , right? I think that has to be part of the equation and maybe even you could benefit from more now because you are not the same person you used to be but your bones are just as heavy as the were. Strength works on the body fat and ability to move those bones. It's underrated.

So far my most important old guy books are "fast after 50" and 'Younger next Year", The two taken together shed a lot of light on what might work going forward. Neither suggest a program like Gary Patton's , it seems like much more moderation is suggested and of course TRT is not. Both emphasize serious strength training.

Anyway, I think this 71 year old guys training could be awesome. It's the volume I wonder about. In the first RW article he said he trained this way because he didn't want to put in the time and volume running, but based on reviewing what he says he does, he has always been putting in a lot of time and volume and intensity relative to a normal running program. C'mon , doubles everyday and yoga /stretching? That's professional training. Can't knock it without trying and I can do a lot of work, but there is a mix of intensity in there too. Questions.

You are correct and I do weight training plus a variety of supplemental exercises. Still for the endurance athlete I am I still have to lean to my strong suit which involves more volume if I am to reach my potential. I am soon to be 68.

I am only 56 but am a tall runner and maybe that's why LSD doesn't work to well for me even if I would do it if I could.

I did 3 days of doubles with the 40 minute circuit using body weight or only the olympic bar and heavy reps. I just winged it with running supplemental type stuff after 15 minute warm-up in my bike trainer. I have been lifting and doing core stuff all along and my aerobic work has been high for years. The aerobic work definitions I use are from the polar beat HR app I use and align pretty well with typical definitions.

Day 1 , AM 40 minute strength circuit PM 5 miles in rolling hills with two miles fairly hard (aerobic tempo and max training)

Day 2, AM 40 minute strength circuit PM Heavy lifting low reps high weights

Day 3, AM 40 minute strength circuit PM 100 minutes Mountain biking (aerobic basic training and steady state

I took Monday of, well fished and hiked all day and am starting another block today. This constitutes a serious fitness program.

just the AM strength if done everyday is 280 minutes. I figure about 10 hours total not including yoga or stretching or foam rolling etc. . That's a lot with these rotating hardish, strength, straining, and running sessions. I am thinking about how to put a properly periodized plan together with these elements. Longer but easy duration on the Running and Aerobic Cross training wit low dose LT and VO2 max, then build with more LT , go to more Vo2 max and peak?

I have seen Alberto Juantorenas training in the archives here on LR. This is harder.
