You haven't missed anything. I've been living in that area since 1995 and have never even bothered to go to see the race. It's a D (like in Dallas) event in terms of the field quality and times. You'll have more fun betting on rat races. They must have paid Meb and Shalane a decent amount of money for them to show up as ambassadors to bolster the credibility of their race.
