Half tights are meant to be worn alone provided they are "shorts" and not "underwear".
Ive never worn any brief or anything else under half tights. Wouldnt it be obvious and look silly? Not to mention pointless? Tights are tight, they hold the stuff in place.
I cringe when I see guys wearing UA compression underwear as shorts though. Come on people.
As mentioned: for shorts resembling half tights
Drawstring = Shorts (though I have some without). Usually a little thicker material.
Wide elastic waistband = Underwear. Also usually thinner, often with odd seaming/stitching.

That's different with women. Most people don't want see some guy in flimsy thin tights with the clear outline of his one-eyed trouser monster. I remember once at the start line of a race a guy next to me in thin tights had an erection and was trying to cover it up with his hands. Other runners next to him started laughing and couldn't help but ask the guy "are you going the run the race with hands over your d..."?

No...it's side-effects from the night before. My doctor says Viagra can be unpredictable with some people (though when I discussed this problem with him he had hold himself back from laughing ?). I just have be careful if I'm running a race after a night of Viagra. ?
