Until Nike or Footlocker pulls out of the championship xc racket entirely, I think we are going to have to be happy with two national champions. As several have mentioned here, I think it's gonna be Footlocker as they have infinitely less name-brand creds.
I'd be curious to know the financials on NXN and FL. I mean, do these events really generate money?
This all sort of reminds me of the 2014 situation when AllieO won NXN and Rohrer won FL. I think there was some speculation back then as to who was the "true" champ. Those two didn't face each other in XC until the following year, when AllieO came in 2nd at the 2015 NCAA XC nationals to Molly Seidel.
Similarly, we'll have to wait at least until next year to see Tuohy v Lane over 5K. It would be nice to see them square off in a "dream 2-mile" or some such thing this Spring. Rohrer and AllieO did not meet in a "dream" event as one was sick or injured.
Bottom line: Tuohy's record time on that soft course is incredible. Right now - I'd have to give her the nod as the best HS XC runner in the USA.

NXN is a joke. 90% of top finishers were individuals. Maybe Tuohy would rather run in San Diego but bullied or peer pressured by her high school team. This is how scheming Nike is. How many studs are brow beat into doing NXN regionals?

Troutner and Hasty are #1 and #2 in the nation and they are not going to FL
Tuohy is #1 and Chmiel is probably #3 (she does have a 9:18 PB). Neither are going to FL
How, exactly, is that the "right thing" for Katelyn Tuohy, who trained to peak for NXN and would be adding an extra "last minute" race, racing 10 weeks in a row, and going against the 2nd best female runner in the country, who would be coming off of a weeks rest???
Not to mention, Tuohy would get gutted on the boards for ducking Lane if she declined the invitation, which is exactly what she SHOULD do if they invite her.
And for the record, Tuohy would STILL beat Lane.
But it would be incredibly unfair to put her in that position.

Tuohy could have skipped both NXN and FL, and in my book she STILL would be the best HS XC runner this year.

I love Footlocker- it has tradition and an elite 40 runner field- but Cross-Country is a team sport.

Then why so many individuals in NXN without a team? Individuals dominated this year. You are ignoring point that studs are bullied into NXN but would rather do San Diego. You really think Tuohy would rather do Porkland than SD at this time of year?

Its in politics, not XC, where anything goes, nothing matters and nobody cares!
Meh, Footlocker needs to just give up the ghost and save some face. The Evil Empire will squash it eventually. Having both of these meets is completely redundant. High school kids could give a crap about tradition. If they did Notre Dame would still be competitive.
So I just read on Dyestat that Footlocker indeed did send out an invite to Tuohy, but was declined due to it being so last minute.

Well for all you people interested and debating between Claudia Lane and Katelyn Tuohy, the above interview indicates the answer. Tuohy is superb, but unless injured, she should have accepted the offer and race Claudia. Enough Said!

Very proud of FL for giving her the option! Even if she didn't accept, I'm very impressed that they acknowledge how great a match up between Tuohy and Lane would be and that it solidifies the aspect of FL being the race with the best of the best individual talent in the country.
Agree 100%. That being said, if Tuohy towed the line against Lane, this would have been the most anticipated HS cross country race ever. She should have just said "yes"
How is this any different than the different divisions a state has? Arguably, my state's 3 best runners were in different classes and won. They have or will compete against each other at some point (or not). I don't see what the big deal is.
She already says she doesn’t taper - so it’s not that she is at the end of a taper. She clearly choose to do nxn knowing that the other top runner in the nation won’t be there. She turns down offer, even though she choose not to do regional meet, to compete against the top girl in the country. She doesn’t want to race her this year in cross country - plain and simple.
Footlocker should hang it up, and NXN slightly tweak its individual qualification standards. NXN is the better event. No reason we shouldn't run HS Nationals like NCAA Nationals.
