Can someone please explain why people on this website were saying there's at least 6 California teams that could beat the top New York team this year? FM clearly beat them today. Moral of the story is to stop hating on New York and Speed ratings?

but....Muh 5k times were so much faster in California!!!! uhhhh.... New York cheats!!
This is XC where times can't be used for rankings and we all know that Cali usually only runs 3 miles on fast ass courses. Yeah, mount sac is hilly but it's not a 5k and doesn't compare to the likes of bowdoin park and all the other tough courses in New York. New York gets snow and ice in their races and obviously rain and mud. Does Cali even get rain in their races?

I'm gonna go with....
Because most of them don't have the slightest idea wtf they're talking about. :-D
I still don't understand Meylan's speed ratings but obviously they're not NY biased.
It has to be pointed out that most CA teams are coming off a stretch of at least 4 consecutive weeks of hard racing. These teams have to peak for Section and State on back to back weekends then turn around and run nationals.
Portland got crap for sandbagging their conference meet which was what, 15 days before NCAA? If a Southern Section CA team sandbags at CIF-SS finals, they won't even make state, much less NXN.

CA doesn’t allow spikes for cross country so if it rains the races are ran on an alternate course or cancelled.
Oh boo hoo. New York has had the same thing, from sectionals to states to feds to regionals. And New York has a 6 hour flight and a 3 time zone difference which California does not have. Yet, California continues to make excuses whereas New York does not. Both states deserve to have their own regions, but California people need to realize that they aren't any better than New York, and this years NXN race showed that.

No, not in so cal, which they can't help. Contrary to conspiracy theorists, humans cannot control the weather.
In my 4 years running races in CA (I'm in NY now) I don't think I ever ran a cross country race with rain or even sprinkling.
I did, however, run several races that were 90º, very dry, and windy (gotta love those Santa Ana Winds.)
Californians can't control the conditions they are given. That lack of exposure helps make them speedsters in track but not as sturdy/tough in cross country.

Eh, as a NYer and as someone who travels a lot, a 3 hour layover is not a huge deal, especially when they are getting up LATER rather than earlier.
Southern Californians also have to fly, granted it's 3 hours less time but still.
NY simply has just been better at nationals.

But you say you travel a lot. Many of these kids do not, and for some of them it might even be their first ever flight, or first time on the west coast. Having to adapt to that and then trying to race can be difficult, but they do it all without complaining unlike all the California whiners on here
Everyone was sleeping on them?
Meylan had them #8 overall, #7 at NXR and #15 at State
Watchout had them #7 at NXR and #7 at State (looks like he didn't post an overall projection)
Dyestat had them at #9
Milesplit had them at #8
I wouldn't say any of those media outlets were wrong. It was a competitive field, and a competitive race, and they all seemed to think that FM were among the teams that could trophy.
The CA racing schedule is the downfall.
NXN is not a true national championship.

Again, NY has three to four hard weeks of racing prior to NXN as well. Stop complaining.
One word....Dirty!
Lets see how Aris' guys do on a completely paved and dead flat course on a 68 degree sunny day! The tables would be turned for sure man!
Hasn't Manlius been known to skip the federation meet? This debate between New York and California will rage on until 1 of 2 things happen: big-time New York programs come out to California and get crushed at Mt Sac and Clovis (the Woodlands were barely in the top 10 at Clovis this year on the boys side) or Doug Soles and Great Oak along with some other big state powers go to New York for the Manhattan invite and dominate. It's clear time and time again that most New York teams seem to be better prepared to handle the NXN conditions than California teams (for whatever reason). Until either side ventures to the other's turf during the season these debates will continue.

You mean the kids from New York aren't a bunch of pussies?
That's pretty clear.
You mean New York gets to run 7th and 8th graders on their teams while California coaches can have no contact with middle schoolers?

This is an invalid argument, as California schools have much higher enrollments. Take a look at the enrollment sizes of all the California schools at NXN:
Great Oak-3600
Roosevelt-3800
St. Francis-1700
Buchanan-2600
Claremont-2400
Now take a look at the New York enrollments:
FM-1400
Corning-1600
Liverpool-2200
Saratoga-2000
Burnt Hills (who should've been there)-1100
Adding in 7th and 8th grade numbers would essentially even the playing field. Stop looking for excuses for why New York continues to beat California when clearly they are just better.
