And should universities really be incentivizing young kids to bash their heads against each other?
18 to 22 year old people are NOT young kids.

Use your head, man. At what age do football players start getting recruited?

I can't use my head. I have CTE!!
So I didn't read the whole article. Does Gladwell ONLY say Penn or does he say we should just do away with college/youth football totally?
Based on the crowd sizes at Franklin Field they've been boycotting it for years. The only time the stadium is full is for Penn Relays.
His name is Malcolm Gladwell.
My sister and brother in law went to Penn. If an Ivy team is good and has a shot at an Ivy championship, students will go to the games. But otherwise, the games are not very well attended. Football is an Ivy sport mainly because the traditions run very deep and nixing the sport would upset alums too much. So, if students boycotted football, no one would really know or care that much.
Starting resistance to football and CTE at Ivy schools would also bring into relief the class and racial divisions on CTE and football. The students rally to support and protect the rich white kids who will need their brains in the future when they are doctors, lawyers and businessmen. But the poor African American kid from Alabama getting his brain smashed to bits as a lineman for an SEC powerhouse is cannon fodder for white college football fans.
And that is where this is all headed. Football will end up a modern gladiator sport with poor African Americans bashing each other's brains out for the entertainment of white football fans. Any effective resistance would have to come from the players. Players should be coming up with modified rules to better protect them from concussions and refuse to play until the rules are implemented.

Incentivizing? Penn does not offer athletic scholarships.

LRC, home of the functionally illiterate.
Who says they are functional?
I didn’t realize they forced black kids to accept scholarships at Alabama.

Penn State is a technical school in Williamsport. Penn is the Ivy League school near located between Centre Hall and Port Matilda, PA.
There won't be football either of those places in 20-30 years.
No reason to have football anywhere, actually.

It's bad for football. I question any parent who lets their young child play football.
The decision to go on to college football is often an economic one.
It's bad for football, but Gladwell is correct.
CTE should really be the end of football as we know it. Perhaps the States should adopt something safer. Like rugby.
Interestingly, it is the equipment and the rules around the sport that is the problem. The hard helmets are a weapon for destruction, just it is the gloves in boxing that is doing the harm. Rugby isn't safe but it is safer than the NFL.
CTE is being blamed for all kinds of behavior: suicide, depression, addiction. A few years ago, I asked one of the lead scientists in this field what kind of controls they'd instituted for PEDs, mental illness etc. His answer: none really. Essentially, the large bulk of research has been done on "affected" brains only, not brains in general. I am not a scientist but am quite certain that what we know of this "disease" is rudimentary at best.
Concussions can be a serious injury and should not be taken lightly but my belief is that, especially in youth sports, they are way over reported and diagnosed. Having suffered a couple of them during my HS/college playing days, I can assure you the force needed to generate them rarely happens at the youth level.
I also work in the media. Issues like CTE are catnip to my peers. It's sensational and makes editors and reporters feel good about themselves for saving the world without asking serious questions or doing their homework.

It's almost there already. Not just poor African Americans-- the poor in general.
Good news for US track, soccer, lacrosse, etc., though.
I wonder what sport will the rich kids will take up after they lose lacrosse and soccer?
Which scientist are you quoting?
Because that’s incorrect.
Your whole post is.
I doubt you’ve read a single scientific article on the topic.

Not with the NFL and NCAA covering up.
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
Move over Mark Coogan, Rojo and John Kellogg share their 3 favorite mile workouts
Mark Coogan says that if you could only do 3 workouts as a 1500m runner you should do these
Red Bull (who sponsors Mondo) calls Mondo the pole vaulting Usain Bolt. Is that a fair comparison?
