"no one did what I did in training, these super hard workouts..."
Guess that answers the question of if they are even working that hard which had been brought up by sum.

Wow 8 miles! What is that, 50 minutes of running? Pure insanity. This is her third appearance at NXN. She’s not a novice. 8 miles is not a big deal nor is doing two workouts if that’s what she’s used to. Too many runners/coaches cut the volume at the end of the season and fall flat after the first mile. The course will be a mess when the girls take to it tomorrow. Tuohy may still have nobody else in the picture behind her when she finishes, but it’s not ideal for her stride so maybe it’ll be closer than many of us expect.

Wow, just saw the Touhy interview on mile split. She did an 8 mile run on Thursday, two days before the NXN meet and did two workouts this week. She is a soph in HS? Is the coach a little crazy?
Guessing we should enjoy what we see now, because this is going to begin to turn in a year or two.

Ok, that might be what she is used to doing. Does that mean it is appropriate for a soph girl? How hard is she training and how much harder will she be able to train in two years? Seems like it is excessive even for a stud.

At her age, Haile G was running barefoot to school 10K each way, every day. Excessive?
Both Tuohy and her coach are well-grounded and know better how to handle her training than our guesswork here.
So as a high school sophomore what we got from how they train in several interviews: lifting (clearly lots based on her muscle), she swims a lot, her workouts are "super hard and no one did more." Does 8 miles two days before nationals. HS sophomore. This is NYS high school running-certain programs forget it is high school, focus results now. When sometimes they should focus on holding kids back and letting them develop, maybe not having them cross train and lift. There is no hs level training, and what the top NYS kids do is nothing like what college level kids do. And in NY they get these kids in 7-8th grade - so by 10th they have been doing a lot - and feel they can up the level of training because of, the years of training behind them.
maybe so, but? wrote:

Uh... yes? How is 8 miles for a sophomore girl difficult? Any girl running under 20 minutes would be used to that.
Best case scenario she is still training through to meet up with Lane in Edinburgh....
I watched a FloTrack video on this team. The coach seems like a football reciting out of Jack Daniels. Could be worse.

If she's averaging about 60 miles a week and has been running for at least four years now, is that really excessive for a world-class talent? Considering most world-class talents like her can end up averaging about 100 mile a week, she's only at about 60% of her potential right now. Given that it typically takes about 7-8 years to build up to one's max, I don't think there's anything wrong with her being in the 90mpw range by the time she's a sophomore in college.
If you want to be the best at something you have to do that thing a lot. That's the way the nervous system works. The trick is to keep the ferritin levels high and the bodyfat high enough that a girl is having 6+ periods a year to help ensure the bone density is strong.
But the data is out there right? Wouldn't it be possible to see for instance the probability of a certain runner making the olympic trials given his/hers results in HS/college? Results are available for both.
I'm genuinely curious to see whether your hypothesis is true, and you seem to know enough math to maybe make it happen.

I thought this was an off year for XC Championships?
It's an annual race...kind of a World's "Lite", i.e. without an army of Kenyans killing everyone else.
This year:

Would be cool if they both competed there!
Looks like a weak race. Seems like a waste of time.

It won't be weak if both Lane and Tuohy are there.
It is actually one of the most aesthetic XC courses anywhere, and well-covered for free
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
Move over Mark Coogan, Rojo and John Kellogg share their 3 favorite mile workouts
Mark Coogan says that if you could only do 3 workouts as a 1500m runner you should do these
Red Bull (who sponsors Mondo) calls Mondo the pole vaulting Usain Bolt. Is that a fair comparison?
