She ran 17:01.0
Over one minute ahead of second place
It would have placed her 35th on the boys side (5th Sophomore, 1 second behind the 4th. No Freshmen beat her).
She ran the first 2.5k in 8:21. The boy who finished 24th (for example) ran his first 2.5k in 8:24.
She would have been kicking in with Robert Becker who ran 17:00.5 for 34th. Becker, a senior, ran a 4:18 mile last year.
She would have been the 6th runner of the boys' Manlius team (the winners) and would have been the 5th and 2nd scorer of the boys second and third place teams (Corning and Deluge respectively).
How out of this world is Tuohy's time at NY NXN Regionals

As crazy as Claudia Lane is, seems like K Tuohy is still even better. Not since Sarah Baxter/Mary Cain/Elise Cranny/Alexa Efraimson have we seen this

Cain's best time at NY NXN was 17:42...

Has Katelyn Tuohy run a 4:04 1500? Or qualified for the WC finals? I don’t think so.
Let’s show some respect for Mary and Katelyn both by not comparing XC times that shouldn’t be compared.
Remember... MC wasn’t trying to run 17:01 here. We don’t know what her goal was on the day she ran 17:42. She wasn’t chasing after Katelyn. She also cared WAY more about track than XC. Course records are impressive but don’t tell the whole story. We just can’t compare two greats without a head-to-head matchup. Not fair to Mary or Katelyn. -

Watch Tuohy go 4:14 in the mile this spring, which will make her better than Cain. -

I was talking about her XC performance, not her track performance. Who knows, she may end up as fast as Cain on the track, but she has not proven that yet.
On the XC course however, I don’t believe that any HS girl has been at Tuohy’s level ever.
She can only compare herself to boys at this point. Every boys team in the nation would want her on their team. -
You do know she ran faster on the same course last week

Tuohy is great, but that's still a VERY bold statement.
No HS girl has ever been on her level?
In the last few years, off the top of my head:
California's Claudia Lane or Sarah Baxter, Indiana's Anna Rohrer, Washington's Alexa Efraimson, Virginia's Weini Kelati, or Colorado's trio of Katie Rainsberger, Brie Oakley, and Elise Cranny... I don't know about Mary Cain (she was more of a track standout than an XC standout, kind of like Katie Murphy) because she beat everyone outside of Baxter (another one of the All-Time XC standouts) once she hit her stride.
Or, go back further and consider the likes of Colorado's Melody Fairchild or California's Amber Trotter... -
New York boys are just embarrassingly bad compared to the New York girls.
-
For weeks now, Tuohy has been running...by herself, mind you...consistently the same times as boys who have already run low 4:20s and 9:30s. And she is more of a miler than a 5K runner. I fully expect her to go sub-4:30 for the mile indoors and likely break 9:00 for 3K. As a sophomore. I have seen all of the above listed girls come and go, and Katelynn is at least as good as any of them.

This is the most rational post that will made on this subject, especially when we are talking about XC. -

It's really not even that close. -
Can someone tell her to slow down and relax. Stop training this hard. How'd it work out for most of the other phenoms people are listing? Her goal can't be to be awesome in HS and then fade into obscurity, so someone give her a chance to be good beyond HS.

Do you know how many MPW she is running/speedwork she is doing? How do you know how hard she is training and if she needs to slow down her training? -

It's too late. The Genie is out of the bottle. You can't really throttle down and pick up again. I have never seen that work out really well. She can't go back in time. She now has to focus to be the best that she can be in the next one or two years. The likelihood of her improving in College is less than 1%. I would even say that the odds of her running her best HS times as a senior is less than 50%. In her case, it's like telling a 15 year old gymnast to relax and wait for College. No, for her, the time is now. She will never run a 3:55, but that is very rare anyway. She could still improve into College, but don't "plan" for that. She will probably end up running faster than 99.9% NCAA runners when she is done HS. That's an accomplishment that you won't be able to take away from her. -

If so, I am assuming that the conditions were slower today, as her 16:52.4 would have put her 24th on the boys side (and only 16 seconds out of the top 10). -

I didn't know Mary Cain posted here and even had a letsrun profile. Who knew? -
Ever hear of Amber Trotter? She was better and didn't do ANYTHING after high school. This is what will happen with Tuohy. Sorry but truth.

She has done a lot after high school. It just never involved running.
On the other end of the spectrum, you have Jordan Hasay, Shalane Flanagan, and Sara Hall. All were prodigies during HS.
