I've searched for the criteria used to determine the NXN at-large teams and can't find any. Does anyone know what standards or criteria are used to determine which teams get the at-large bids?

Must finish top four in respective region. Committee then looks for head to head wins against teams that auto qualified and at-large candidates that finished top four. No region can get more than 2 at large bids.

Thanks for the response. I knew about the top-4, but I'm curious about the head-to-head win criteria. Because NXRs encompass numerous states, it is more likely than not that most of these teams never raced each other outside of NXR so I would think that head-to-head outside of NXR is not that common. Also, I can't seem to find a total of at-large bids. Is it variable or is there a set number? Thanks again.
from the NXN website FAQ:
HOW DO YOU QUALIFY?
AUTOMATIC QUALIFIERS INTO NIKE CROSS NATIONALS FROM THE NIKE CROSS REGIONALS: THE TOP TWO PLACING CLUBS IN EACH GENDER OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION RACE AT EACH REGIONAL WILL EARN AUTOMATIC BERTHS TO NXN IN PORTLAND. ADDITIONALLY, THE TOP FIVE PLACING INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE NOT ON AUTOMATICALLY-PLACING CLUBS WILL ADVANCE TO NXN AS INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIERS.
AT-LARGE QUALIFIERS INTO NXN FROM THE REGIONALS: A TOTAL OF FOUR AT-LARGE CLUB BERTHS PER GENDER WILL BE AWARDED. CLUBS PLACING EITHER THIRD OR FOURTH IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION RACE AT EACH REGIONAL WILL MOVE INTO A POOL OF CLUBS RECEIVING CONSIDERATION FOR ADVANCING TO NXN AS AN AT-LARGE QUALIFIER. A COMMITTEE OF EXPERTS WILL DETERMINE THE AT-LARGE QUALIFIERS.
GREATEST WEIGHTING BY THE COMMITTEE WILL BE GIVEN TO THIRD-PLACE CLUBS FROM THE CHAMPIONSHIP RACE AT EACH REGIONAL WHO DEFEATED ANY EVENTUAL NXR CHAMPION IN PRIOR WEEKS. IN ORDER FOR THIS WEIGHTING TO BE EMPLOYED FOR THE THIRD-PLACE CLUBS, THE VICTORY MUST HAVE OCCURRED WHEN AT LEAST FIVE CLUB MEMBERS FROM THE EVENTUAL NXR CHAMPIONSHIP CLUB COMPETED IN THE SAME RACE AS THE AFOREMENTIONED LOSS.
PS: The heartland is a very weak region and will not receive an at-large berth. The at-large berths will come from other regions.
Sorry to say zat but your alma mater has a better chance of winning NCAAs next year than Aquinas does of getting to NXN. Didn't beat any worthwhile teams (from a national point of view) all year and you would need the 3rd place team to get in before you anyway as they don't jump regional order of placing.
Correcting myself to st James not Aquinas.
Will be interesting to see if the Woodlands and Eastwood get at large bids out of South.
Oh, I know that. My question came from curiosity regarding the criteria. The more I looked, the more vague they seemed to become. Head-to-head outside of NXR would seem to be the exception rather than the rule. In a MileSplit video review, they were even going to speed ratings at one point. Doesn’t seem to be a clear hierarchy of criteria. Not analyzing anyone’s chances, just curious how the decision was made.
If your team is from Oregon and you're 3rd in the Northwest region your team will make it.

No dog in that fight, but I bet they both make it.
Do they have to take #3 eastwood if they take #4 Woodlands? Woodlands has head to head victories over the other two.
My guess is both go and they avoid controversy. It does likely mean that a region will get screwed over.
South Region will not get 2 at larges. There are 4 total. They cannot take TW over EP. Both would have to be taken and I don't for see that happening. Best scenarios look like this
1) California gets 2, Southeast 1, NY 1
2) CA gets 1, SE gets 1, SW gets 1, NY gets 1
At large committee is made up knowledgeable people of the sport. Watchout was once a part of said committee and I believe Rich Gonzalez is still part of it.
Head to head wins are important. That's why teams with NXN aspirations go to big invitationals with the hope of racking up points. Woodbridge, MT Sac, Great American, Bob Furman, Manhattan, Nike South, etc.
Ps. I ran NTN in 06 and NXN 07-08.

Totally get that, but the problem is that some states high school activity associations in their infinite wisdom have in-season travel restrictions which forbid them from traveling X miles from the state during the season, seriously restricting if not preventing their ability to travel to those meets.

Eastwood beat both Southlake Carroll and Flower Mound (with Maier) at Region 1..

You could have traveled to Roy Griak and faced...
All 3 teams in the Heartland that finished ahead of you.
The top 2 teams from the Midwest
The top team from California.
That is 5 teams that qualified for NXN that you could have faced in one race that is within your state's travel restriction.
Timpanogos, Desert Vista, Green Hope, and St. Francis for boys allegedly

Which is awful, to be honest. In no way is the Southwest deserving of two bids.
Confused to as why Desert Vista was selected?!?!??? Odd.
