How ridiculous and off topic. Uses Shalane like a tool.

Ridiculous article.
You can't just give Flanagan praise for working hard and seeing the reward. Instead, they have to use her success to compare and trash Trump?
Ridiculous.

Also, the author said shalane is not petty and elevates women. I guess she was so focused on Trump that she missed shalane's response to Hasay's result at Chicago, which was pretty dang petty.
Petty?
Doping threatens the very existence of her sport. I don't get how it's petty when someone asks you, "Hey what do you think of the NOP's great performance in Chicago?" if you reply "Well the group is under investigation so it's hard to know what to know."
Honestly, any other response would be dishonest. Barring a conviction, to the day I'll die, I'll probably be wondering that (and about a bunch of other performances that event aren't under investigation).
But to turn this article in politics was horrible. I just don't get it. And what does Ivanka Trump have to do with Trump? So now we judge the president based on what his daughter does?
I️t is opinion and labeled as such.
You want running to get more popular, but then when an opinion piece looks at running through a lens of the whole culture, including politics, your response is, “only talk about running and don’t pollute I️t with any other content or cultural influences”. I think I️t is a good thing when running is mixed in with the major controversies and issues and influences of our time- I️t means running is a part of the culture and not a fringe sport that nobody cares about.
Way to go, Shalane! Congrats- very well deserved!

You must have read a different opinion piece, because the president is not mentioned or “judged”. Was there another article being discussed?
But regarding your question of what she has to do with the president, she is on his staff and has an office in the WH.

Editor's note: We changed the title to make it more descriptive. The original title was "Flanagan vs. Trump"
[ii] OP's note: I liked my original title, "Flanagan vs. Trump", better. It was simple, invoked curiosity, and required people to click for further detail. I think your new subject line heading is too long for a "title" and a bit sensational. But it's your web site and at least you didn't make any spelling errors. Thank you for bumping.
Read this article instead. This is not garbage.

This would have been a great article on Flanagan's strength as a leader if the author didn't toss in the nugget of Trump bashing.
The reporter would not keep his job if he did not twist any topic in an attack on Trump.
The Oligarchs are pissed Trump got elected instead of any of their hand-picked puppets (i.e., every other single candidate).
B.S. article turning an athletic accomplishment into something political. Get tired of this crap. Just turns me off, and that goes for both sides of the political spectrum.

This. And only this.
TDS has F’d up people’s heads. Particularly in select coastal bubbles.
The mock outrage from the LetsRun conservative snowflakes is just adorable. There were two sentences about Ivanka Trump. She is an extremely prominent political/cultural figure, and her approach to feminism is a perfect contrast to the leadership Shalane has shown in the women's running community, which is what the article is primarily about. It probably wasn't necessary to include it, but it wasn't just an irrelevant cheap shot, either.
Shalane seems quite pleased with the article in question, by the way:

Could care less about whether Shalane is pleased or her political views.

I detest Trump as much as anyone.
I cannot stand the man. He is an embarrassment to our fair republic.
But I have to agree that the chunk about Mrs. Trump should have been left on the cutting room floor. I read this on the NYT website this morning before I even saw this thread on LRC. My reaction was the same—what not leave that part out? It is jarring, off-topic, and seems determined to alienate.
I don’t get why people are saying critiquing Ivanka’s ideas about feminism is off topic or a ‘swipe’... it is the entire topic (ie Ivanka has a misguided conception of feminism and something in the vein of what Flanagan exhibits is what we should pursue).
If you disagree with it, then disagree with it, but don’t get all but hurt about it. Ivanka has been acting as the American delegate to ‘women’s empowerment’ type international events, written books (or at least had them ghost written for her) about women’s role in society, and otherwise presented herself/her ideas as feminist. She’s fair game for criticism.

Innocent until proven guilty. It was wrong!
Her opinion would be much better if she just took out the Ivanka part and inserted the Fxxk Yeah clip playing over and over. That clip will never get old.

The article is titled "Shalane Flanagan Effect" but the "entire topic" is Ivanka?
Every single one of her training partners — 11 women in total — has made it to the Olympics while training with her
Can anyone name all 11?
Yah, I agree with most others. NOT a Trump fan, Ivanka included in recent times. But this comparison was a stretch in the article.
Was unnecessary.
The only false thing about the article is that the author pertains to know feminism, but they don't. The post 1968 feminists are all talk but their achievements are miniscule. It was really western women a hundred plus years ago that did all the hard yards. Modern feminist activists are just Marxists
