Yes, it reminds me of the HC at University of Houston. Met him once. Such a d-bag. Really full of himself.
haha I have never met him before but I'll take your word for it
Unfortunately the described "ego coaches" are often the most successful in the NCAA and professional circuit. Possibly it is entirely because of how they combine their personal views of success with their team's success which makes them want to win so badly. On the other hand, I've heard from many athletes how miserable it is to run under these type of coaches. Overall, no coach or program is perfect.
hmm sounds like a guy who just lost his streak in the big 12

At least Magness has some solid chops. The biggest ego coach who's a creepy nothing burger is Jason Karp.

Who are you talking about and why is he full of himself; I would like to hear your reasoning.
Yes, probably some college and pro coaches, but it also reminds me of the head hs coach whom I'm an assistant for. It can be difficult working under someone so stuck in their ways when the tweaks needed in training are so obvious. He wants to take the program to the next level and be a top 3 team in the state but also not change anything else because "this is the way we've always done it".
This is so funny in a sad way because Magness himself is an ego driven coach.
Case in point:
- many of his posts, tweets, etc are related to him telling others how they do it wrong and how he thinks they should do it (running, coaching). He is not simply about instruction or education but rather about telling you if you aren't doing it that way you are doing it wrong. His passive aggressive tone to most everything he does makes him few friends in the coaching ranks. I have heard him referred to as the "King of SubTweet". Ha, definitely the title of an ego driven coach. He thinks his way is right and everything else is wrong, and posts with an air of superiority to everything he says. He fails to realize that in the real world the their are countless personalities and human variations so that many combinations of things can work and be successful and his way isn't always best for the situation. Sad his ego blinds his analytical mind on this issue. I can give you countless examples of coaches with all different styles and personality that are success and are failures. The biggest deciding factor is that coach's style right for that particular person or situation.
- Steve loves to lead everyone to believe he is the man behind the accomplishments of many pro athletes, except when you talk to those athletes you find he is simply an advisor or reviewer of their programs or someone who they may ask for an opinion from. He actually coaches very few athletes out side of his Univ. of Houston team but includes many in his tweets and website. Examples: he does not coach Sara Hall or Neely Spence-Gracie but rather advises them or is a resource for them at best. You'd never know that listening to him. He is selling himself, he is an ego driven coach in many respects.
Steve, if you read this, an we know you will as you are a ego driven coach, you would help and reach many more people if you educated and posted with humility. Putting out good information does not require chastising those who do it differently in a passive-aggressive tone. Recognize there are many ways to attack the same problem that many be successful. Their are those of us in the running world who ignore what you say (and our numbers are growing) at this point mainly because we have a hard time stomaching the way you say it. The enemy of peer to peer communication is smugness and arrogance, both of which you exude Take that off the table and you will be much more successful in communicating your research and ideas. Try this, when you write an article simply state an educational idea/premise and reasons behind it and then recognize the exceptions and variations that may be out there and there are no absolutes on the issue, and advise that while there are other ways you recommend this way for the stated reasons. This God like complex you write and post from is disturbing and off putting.

Dude, he was talking about Magness. You missed the irony.
This is the best, most insightful comment I've ever seen on this board.
One of the best posts I've read on this forum. I know a lot of others in Texas who feel the same way.
More bad news for Nike on the way, I guess, so it's time to set up an anti-Magness thread that Nike's PR firm can fill with comments. Hope they're paying you better now.
Look, I've interacted with Magness throughout the years, recently getting to know him fairly well, and I'll feed the fire and defend against the trolls.
RE: Sara Hall
Magness coached Hall writing all her workouts and such for a few years and then Ryan took the reigns. This isn't a secret, it's well publicized and Ryan, Sara, and Steve have all talked about it publicly. If you follow Magness on social media, you'd know this.
As for Neely, I have no idea, but all I know is Neely tweets about him coaching her and talks about him as her coach on her websites.
Beyond those two, he coaches a bunch of other people. You don't have to be a rocket scientist, you just have to listen to interviews, see who tweets what, and it's pretty clear. Or just ask him. He literally sent me 3 weeks of Natosha Rogers, Sara Hall (from 2 years ago), Sarah Crouch and Mark English's training to answer one of my questions.
RE: The rest of the stuff.
Steve puts out more content than just about any coach there is. Almost all of it completely free to help coaches and other runners. How do I know that? Well, when I e-mailed him and his podcast friend Jon Marcus, both responded and offered to help a lowly college coach who was trying to find his way. In other words, they cared enough to respond when no one was looking.
Love it or hate it, he is passionate about running. But, while you are on the message board, he's providing information, education, and fighting for the sport. That's more than any of us posting useless stuff on a message board do, myself included.
Nice try Nike troll to make a controversy out of something that isn't one.

Bingo! Saladbar is in trouble. Mo left, FBI is after him. Bash the whistleblowers. Anyone notice the negative Kara thread as well?
Standing ovations!!! Right on spot! Thanks! +++++
Four years ago, my son had mono during the winter track season. I emailed Steve for suggestions about a training schedule to get my son ready for the outdoor state meet. He responded to all of my emails and gave me suggestions. My son went onto place 2nd in the state meet. Much of that had to do with the suggestions from Steve.
A coach with an ego wouldn’t have answered any of my emails or given my the advice. Steve is a great advocate for the sport of running.
