Checkout the Japanese yearly top 25 marathon list over at Japan Running News. It lists the team they are on and the date of the race. It’s pretty freakin impressive.
Perhaps adds a bit of perspective.

Thanks - I'm well aware of the Japanese depth in distance running...even done an Ekiden over there. These guys are doing great....coach Ben is doing great.

As a running fan, I just can't get excited about a group of 2:12 performances. I guess I would liken it to 28:xx in the 10k - a great time by all means, but not something a professional runner should be proud of.

Here is my question: How do these guys expect to run fast if the longest tempo they are doing before the race is like 15-16 miles? How do you expect to run 10 more miles at that pace when you haven't trained for it?
Ask my marathoners. The best so far 2.07:38 and the others 2.08.43- 2.10.44. They just do LT-intervals 3000m at longest and special long runs with 10-40 min fast part in intervals or sustained. It really works! They are a living proof. :)
I feel sorry for your athletes, your gigantic ego is sickening.

Damn, Kipchoge can be cold when he comes on these boards. I thought he was a nice dude.
NAZ Elite/Hoka is full of guys who largely did not run at bigtime D1 programs. They open fans up to their training by sharing workouts and other aspects of their marathon buildups. Like Sage said 2:12 used to be able to make the marathon team. Jared Ward has a 2:11 pr and finished 6th at the Olympics. Should he not be proud of 2:11 and 6th? We just saw three guys put in a solid marathon buildup and come away with two 2:12s and a 2:13. As a 2:30s guy, who started over 3 hours, I can appreciate how fast 2:12 is.
Great work from that team and by coach ben.
Very well said. I totally agree with this. We can be both excited about NAZ Elite's accomplishments and still be hoping for more. It's possible to have multiple views at once people!
And thanks to Sage for chiming in and sharing his experiences.
Coming from Australia I know nothing about these guys or their training. They seem to have done a good job. Well done to them.
In regards to training methods, maybe we all should be stepping back in time.
19 of the top 25 US and also 19 of the top 25 UK marathoners ran those performances last century.
The approach back then was a much simpler type of training with most of those guys racing frequently at a variety of distances (and disciplines).
