Choose your career wisely. I've seen guys retire at 55 who lost out on their 20s, 30s, and 40s, kids growing up, etc because they worked 60+ hours a week. Its not worth it. You only live once. If you want to work 24/7 go for it but if that's not whats important to you, then don't do it. Not many people on their death bed wish they had worked more, spent less time with family, made more money, etc. Don't get caught up in a life that involves taking away your best years because you wanted a 70k huge SUV and 5000 sq ft house. I see some of my good friends doing this and every time I talk to them for more than an hour (you know when they first tell me how great they are doing) they reveal they want a new job, they work too much, they wish they could invent something and get rich, they hate their hour commute, etc. I feel bad for them and I can tell they sometimes resent me for the choices I've made.
I was in your place about 15 years ago. I said F that and chose a much different career path, something that I was interested in and pursued my dreams. Without divulging much about my private life I now live at the beach, work from home 90% of the time on my own projects that I choose, and get to see my family all of the time. I get to take my kids to and from school. I get to spend time outside doing whatever I choose on a tuesday morning at 10am if I want. And guess what, the money is more than enough to be happy. I own 2 houses, have 2 cars, wife, kids, etc. and we aren't struggling to pay for dinner or electricity. But I could care less about money and I know I won't own a BMW. I won't ever be rich. I will be middle class. But I also go to spend half of my 20s and all of my 30s living for life not work and you couldn't pay me 5 mill for those memories and experiences. No amount of money is worth your life. I'm not saying be a bum, on the contrary, I am saying follow your dreams and be happy. Find a job that gives you that freedom or even start your own.
