I don't think what you're seeing is limited to just running, it's pretty much social media in a nutshell. Everyone wants to seem relevant, important, and amazing, and social media is their outlet to feed the need for attention. Now it's typically hidden under the guise of helping others, being inspirational, doing it for work, etc but that doesn't change the underlying motivation.

Women are abundantly more fake than men. That's why they excel at social media, this is their jam. If it wasn't social media, it would be some other stupid fake trend that women would flock to because it's in their genetic make up to be fake.

Well said. I concur.

Please edit once again and remove the unnecessary apostrophe. Thank you.
I've actually been feeling the same way as you recently. The people on instagram seem to be the worst. They could be on facebook too, but i don't see them. The inspirational quotes are so cheesy!! Also, I can't imagine stopping in the middle of one of my runs to take a photo of me running or having one of my friends take a photo of me during our runs to share on social media. It's a mindset I don't understand. I run about 60 miles a week and never feel the need to share any of it. It's just something i like to do and enjoy, especially without technology. There's enough screens at work and home. I don't need more screens and data on my runs too!
Strava tried to make me enjoy training less so I stopped using it.
I had been mildly irritated by the whole platform since day one. The last straw was a woman setting a 12:2X 5k course record.
Otherwise, no. Nothing about my training is impacted by 10 minute milers or 5:00:00 marathoners trying to relate to a 15:00 5k. They just don't have "it" and I couldn't care less about their self-promotion.
I really do wish less people today "jogged" and more people would "train" as they did decades ago.

A 5k course run 12.2 times??? Whoah that's a hell of a workout! I'd kudos that.

Very clever.
(You're undoubtedly part of the problem.)
Social media is going to ruin many lives in the years to come. It is such bunch of BS.
It is about self promoting fiction, all you see is fun, glamour and success. That is not real, these people want you to believe they are on top of the world. Total BS. When you are good it is obvious to everyone, when you are not you use social media to give a false impression. The biggest social media users are the biggest losers.

B-b-but social media brings people together how could it be bad!?! Muh followers!! ?
Kicking that sh¡t to the curb is among the best decisions of my life. It's especially pathetic seeing formerly outgoing and socially well-adjusted Boomer aged folks falling so utterly into dysfunction so quickly.
To me it just feels like everything has to be justified on social media and I agree Instagram is the worst of them.
Had a bad race? Spin it in a way so that everyone gives you a congratulations anyway OR blame it on weather, course, nutrition, going out to fast, etc and have social media give you a pity party.
I know bad stuff happens on race day and everyone has bad races, but sometimes you just had a bad race. It's OK to be human. It's also OK to not have to talk about it.
That said. I understand the "Wow these [insert shoe brand / shoe / gear / clothing ] are awesome. Just wrapped up a run / race / workout in them!" It's a mutual benefit between the athlete and the brand. I just don't understand when the focus shifts to the person's vanity and not the product. And yes I know that personality + product sells I get that. But vanity just looks sad and obnoxious and I feel like social media feeds into the vanity of it.
Hey man, some of us are high on life, like to explore, meet people, and take pictures to remember and share it. There's nothing superficial about it! I was taking pictures back in college, before social media was around. Having a platform to share it all is just technology revolution.

You are high on cocaine.
It is not "technology revolution" we protest but rather the shallowness social media encourages in narcissists like you.
That's a pretty accurate description of social media and what American society has evolved into. People be frontin' all the time now, everywhere.
My solution is logging off social media. All that I have left is a Facebook, which I basically use to check the news and make jokes.

No I'm not. Life is too short not to take pictures to remember it all. Who gives a rats ass what other's opinions are? I actually enjoy traveling the world, meeting people, aand experiencing life. So be it if you want to live a private, quiet life. To each his or her own!
Some people aren’t that bad, but some are straight up... annoying. I feel bad saying that, but seeing constant photos of someone’s workouts is bizarre. It’s an interesting phenomenon for sure. I almost want to list the most annoying one, but I probably shouldnt draw any more attention to her. Not sure what all this self promotion is going to do to us in the long run.
