I met Darrell General on a van ride ride from VA to Albany for a track meet in 1993, I think, with the DC Capitals Track Club.
We started talking and he was quite chatty and confident. He was matter of fact about his goals and I thought he was BSing.
I ran the 800 that day and he said he was running the 5000 and figured to win and he was training for the marathon. That threw me off because it was mostly sprinters in the van.
He finished second in 14 low and looked pretty good. He was outkicked by a Moroccan. I really think the winner was Khalid Khannouchi. And that makes sense because K K won the 5000 at the World Student Games in Buffalo that year.
I would bump into Darrell and talk to him a few times over the years. I even managed to beat him in an indoor 3000m at GMU.
He was always nice.
I remember he was interviewed for the Washington Post before the Marine Corp Marathon before 95 or 97 and announced he was going to win it. And he won it.
I do know that he worked full time and trained full time. He was your definitive blue collar runner.
I can't vouch for the sleeping habits. That may have been exaggerated but maybe not.
I also remember him telling me that he ran 70 miles/week, which I thought was low for a marathoner.
Maybe it was runner low balling or that's all he could get in and made it work.
He didn't fit any runner mold that I ever saw but he was pretty good.
