It looks like the leading athletes knew they had overcooked it. Taking the wrong turn was
psychosomatic and made their being passed by the better athletes in the chasing pack look like the fault of the organizers, when in reality it was always going to happen.
The Italians are notorious for cheating in the 1987 Rome Worlds 10,000, where they flipped the laps-to-go sign to 1 when it was really 2, and some of the leaders stopped a lap early, allowing Francesco Panetta to get a medal.

Wrong. Panetta was clear of the pack in second and remained there. They only runners who stopped were behind him (4 or 5 seconds) and wouldn't have beaten him anyway.
I do recall some long jump controversy. Not going to google- bed time.

Don't forget the long jump in 1987, they cheated and deliberately mismeasured an Italian jumper.
Finally, video from ESPN. That Italian media tried to bury this as if it didn't happen makes it really fishy. Qualcosa puzza:
This video from the Sydney Morning Herald explains how much time they lost:

The Guardian also has a piece:

Well they made pretty damn sure about that, didn't they. 4 or 5 seconds isn't out of reach of a big kick.
Counting the laps was pretty easy in that race, just every time Paul Kipkoech ran by.

"Leaders go a long way of course?" It's a marathon. Of course it's a long way, just as you said.
Was typing from a phone, to be fair. Hopefully some mod will edit it “off course” and, given what we know now, change “leaders go a long way off course” to “leaders are LED a long way off course”.

https://twitter.com/kenyanathlete/status/922150421602492416Great conspiracy theory - marathon organizers plot to deliberately go viral for grand show of their own incompetence.

Oh look who crawled out of his crypt. Unlike you, I happen to know Italy well. I’m also acquainted with a number of black people born in Italy, offspring of immigrants from Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia, who know first hand that an Italian birth does not guarantee Italian citizenship (which should please nativists like yourself).
Of course they ran a long way, it’s a marathon!

I'm begging the mods to please fix this.
This guy has uploaded video of how the error was covered live by Italian TV. All so surreal. You can hear one of the commentators try to suppress a chortle as he carries on.
MAMA MIA!!! THATS A SPICY MEATBALL!!!
This almost happened in Houston one year. The police took a wrong turn around mi 9. Fortunately, the driver of the media/timing truck had done the event for several years and stayed on course. At major events, you need to have redundancies. For the police, a marathon is just an overtime gig. They cannot be trusted to know the course without any back up from a race organizer.
How many of those in the lead pack going the wrong way finished?
Wow, this is outrageous. They were lead into traffic. This could have ended up MUCH worse if a runner had been involved in an accident. What a waste of an effort for those guys who were led astray. After watching that documentary with that scumbag agent, I hope these guys get a second chance to compete somewhere better.
