Why would they say the record is soft? That makes no sense.
It makes sense if you notice the poster's handle.

brojos will have a fit with a deep link to their bitter rivals but what the heck
Sarah Baxter ran 16:00 in 2012, which shattered Amber Trotter's mark of 16:16.
I can't even comprehend how a girl in HS ran 15:49.
A spectacular girls time back in my day would be 16:40s. Amber Trotter running a 16:16 was unfathomable. Sarah Baxter running 16-flat was crazy. But sub 15:50 on Mt SAC? That's absolutely insane, that is a fast time for a MALE.
Are we sure this wasn't run on the rain course??
What is the "rain course"? The track?

They've had a few rain years and run on roads instead of the xc course. Baxter ran on the traditional xc course.
Remember she ran in the 16:32 last year, won Footlocker in the low 17s and went sub 10 in the 3200m in the following track season.
Last year she was competing in races left and right, but this year she is taking a smarter and more long term approach.
Her progression has been very impressive so far. As a Freshman she ran 19:42, 16:32 the next year, and now 15:49 as a junior at Mt. Sac.
It will be interesting to see how well she will do against international competition if that's her end of the season goal. Go Claudia!
Lane v. Tuohy will be a Battle Royale if they both race fresh (probably not since they ran separate nationals last year-Tuohy having an off day at NXN)
Today's interviews: Claudia Lane is racing Foot Locker, Katelyn Tuohy is racing NXN.

That kind of $ucks... by default, we will have to give the National Championship to Tuohy. BUt I feel that Lane had a shot.

Nope. She has to show up to be there.
Just because Nike screws up the schedule doesn't mean they win anything.

Claudia will never do NXN since Balboa Park is just a couple hours drive. For Katelyn, the plane ride to FL and NXN is the same duration. If you want to beat Claudia, prove it.
Lol at the FL fan boys still thinking that race maters. NXN master race!
Pure BS. What did Katelyn do last year at NXN? What did Claudia do at FL? Claudia has the upper hand. She won't do NXN cause FL is in her backyard. For Katelyn, what difference is it if you travel to NXN or FL? No difference. Same time on the airplane. Katelyn, the ball is in your court. You want to be considered the top cross country HS girl for 2017, it's simple? Beat Claudia.
Doesn't matter what race it is? It can be anywhere. Just beat Claudia, simple as that. Unless one is a chicken s...!

Great runner but likely tapped out in HS like most greats.
How much of a record was it? How was the course altered?
This year is the first time this specific course has been used. The last section of the course was changed to be a straight shot down an asphalt road, which eliminated a turn, dirt, grass and a small hill. Here's what the record progression looks on this course. New course is faster, but not by 11 seconds or more.
20:47 Vanesa Garcia
19:53 Arissa Hatcher
17:58 Lucina Vincent
17:50 Teresa Perez
16:54 Kristin Fahy
15:49 Claudia Lane
Only the final 150 meters of the original course (post 1990) were different ...
... "the gauntlet" was eliminated due to the construction of the track, so the final part of the course went straight back up the airstrip towards "reservoir hill" ... I doubt there's an advantage at all and quite possibly a little slower as slight incline to the finish incline to the finish line verses the "gauntlet" taking a right turn towards the track and is flat. There is a slight incline up to the finish chute, but that amounts to 30 meters or less.

Doubt there's an advantage to running on flat asphalt versus dirt, grass and a hill? What planet are you from?

The difference between the two courses is less than a second. Seriously.
