Meb was not racing the greatest marathoner of all time. Take Kipchoge out of Rio and Rupp is second, same as Meb in 2004. Meb also greatly benefited from a fanatical fan attacking the lead runner, Meb should have been 3rd.

Seems like Kipchoge is slow too. His best race which was not paced is 2:08:44. Shoot, even Ryan Hall could manage a 2:04.

I'm sure Nike's people are kicking themselves now for not having Rupp at the Sub2 race in Monza. After the way he beat the world record holder and closed in Chicago, Rupp clearly would have run sub-2 hours at Monza.
The smart thing for Nike to do is to set up another Sub 2 attempt for Rupp's spring marathon. It would be marketing genius.

All of Rupps marathons have been in the heat. In the last three, a handful of sub 206 runners have lined up next to him yet they, except for one person, have lost. Do you really think these guys would have run 205 in 70 degrees in Chicago or 75 in Boston? Eights seconds a mile is a conservative estimate of time lost in warm weather and that puts Rupp in the 205 range. Regardless, you can only race the people who will show up and you cannot do anything about the weather. Just look to the Olympics for the coulda, woulda, shoulda antiTrump crowd.

Uhhh three guys have beaten him in his last three marathons. Not one.
If someone can't understand why 2:09 by Galen Rupp is as fast as someone else running 2:05, then you are just hopeless. When you convert his 2:09 by factoring in how fast he closed, the competition he beat, and the harsh conditions in Chicago, there's at least a 4 minute conversion factor. In my mind, he's already a proven 2:05 runner.
Doesn't matter. Rupp is the fasters white marathoner in the world. That's a gig that pays very well. Why would he run a real marathon and mess that up?
