Look at the course map in Newport.
Certainly there are no La Jolla sized hills but it has more ant hills than a miniature golf course.
I can easily see 1:24 for a winning time.
Prof Tony Martins wrote:How does 1:24 win a half marathon?
I have never heard of any 1/2 being won with such a slow time.
That's like 6:20 miles.
Let's just make this clear. What bothers us all is that he seems like a lazy ass. Obviously if he wanted to and he wasn't being such a puss, he could run at least 15 minutes faster for the half and 30 minutes faster than what he will run the marathon in. We as runners that work hard, hate to see talent being wasted, even though he was a highly decorated 800 runner.

According to the race website, there were only 231 finishers in the 1/2 marathon. It's an extremely small race so not surprising that times were so slow there.
Nick Symmonds ran 24:49 for 8k in college. His natural ability for half marathon is obviously way better than 1:24.

When I see a poster on Lets Run stating "us" &/or "we" I think the poster has been posting under multiple names; a bunch of guys/gals are actually sitting in a room; a person really believes he/she is speaking for runners all over the world.
It shouldn't bother anyone how fast Symmonds raced. I do not for a minute believe he was capable of racing 15 minutes faster at his current age and with Symmonds' current training.
I raced only a few road races while a high school and college runner. One road race was a smaller race. I was clearly a better runner than all other runners there. I thought I was being polite that I didn't go all out. I wasn't looking to embarrass anyone.
Nick did a mile time trial recently and clocked 4:50, does that surprise anyone? Was he not going all-out or is that really where he's at right now?
He ran a 1:49 800m back in June... So I was guessing much faster than 4:50 for a mile...
And no I'm not trying to be a hater, I'm just curious.
On his 1:24, I agree he's just having fun, and he won the race so who cares! He's only trying to break 3 in the marathon, so this was probably a good training run with that goal in mind.

You really gotta work harder than that if you want to troll.
I mean, are some of y'all really this salty and whiney in real life? I mean..wtf is wrong with LRC..it's a guilty pleasure to sit and read this middle school gossip and when I click away I thank the lord I have at least half a brain in my head. Honestly, it's truly sad to see this. You think you're funny trolling a retired T&F olympian sprinter for running a 1:24 half at a small, local road race for the fun of it, I wish you well.
I bet Phoebe Wright could run a faster half with some training.
god bless you all.. wrote:

Or to flip things around, Nick ran this just to troll LRC commenters...
Well played.
I put it on my family heritage, I am NOT nick symmonds. Just a life time track and field, trail running fan. Just calling out the lame pettiness that exists here. For every genuine comment, it's followed by 10 jaded runners who care enough to say shit about Pro's when in real life, not one single word would be said.

If you didn't have such low self esteem, I bet you could run faster.
Then you do not know La JollaWith the exception of an amazing 1:06 by the great Sergio Reyes in 2012, La Jolla typically has a finishing time of 1:17-1:20 for the men's winner. This is in April.Newport, Oregon would still be in its hotter fall season even if it is coastal.Heat, hills, smaller race.It is not that surprising that 1:24 won. Also, please remember...6:20 miles are not slow in a race where paid elites are not there.Nick was an elite sprinter but is not expected to be an elite half marathoner.Otherwise, put Eliud up against Usain and cry about why Eliud cannot beat him.

Nick Symmonds is a well known sissy boy, what do you expect
Nick Symmonds has also seen tons of international top ranked competition and has medals. And you?

I did the event - the middle few miles of each loop (2 loop course) had a pretty steep and nasty hill, and the couple miles of climbing and descending were on slick dirt/gravel forest roads.
That being said, he obviously just cruised it and had fun.

What does it mean?
Simple.
As a 1:41 half runner, I cannot do a 1:24; Accordingly, to me, 1:24 is great.
Furthermore, I sense that many here would put down a 1:24 just because they can, yet many who are putting it down likely cannot run a 1:24.
So, really, those who are slower than a time they put down should just shut up because they are not entitled.
Simple.
You're probably pretty old. 1.24 is nothing for people in here training for long distance, like actually running 4+ days a week and having slightly more talent than the average person.
1:41...well its ok but I know several non-runners being able to run that with just a few months training. Certainly people who do other training but by no means are runners. Depends though, you might be a woman? If so its decent. Especially in the 40+ age group. For Nick this wasn't hard. No way.
I am a 43 year old male. And you say it is nothing. Great! So, I would assume that you are breaking 1:15-1:20 in your half finishes??Let us break this down to simpler chunks:If they must train for 1:41, then at that point, they are not non-runners.It weakens your argument when you bring gender into play among non-elites.Symmonds was not originally long distance. You speak for others here, but what is your best time? You also are making it clear that you do not respect runners of different times. Are you that good?
This is maybe splitting hairs but FYI Symmonds best is 1:42 and I believe that Johnny Gray still has the AR and he himself never broke 1:42. A 1:41 is extremely fast and I believe only 5 people have ever broken 1:42:
David Rudisha 1:40.91
Wilson Kipketer 1:41.11
Sebastian Coe 1:41.73
Nigel Amos 1:41.73
Joaquim Cruz 1:41.77
Not to downplay Symmonds accomplishments but seconds and even tenths of seconds do matter at that level for this distance
