Hi everyone. Wrestling with a difficult choice here.
18 y/o male, just started college. Developed compartment syndrome my senior year of HS during track and it’s not going away. Had it tested and it’s diagnosed in both legs. Tried taking about 2 months off and it came back within 3 easy runs that I spread out over the course of a week. So now I have to decide whether I quit running or get the surgery. At the moment I’m leaning towards getting the surgery. Like a lot of people here I run because I’m decently fast and enjoy it, not just to stay in shape, so the idea of switching to biking or something like that isn’t appealing to me. On the other hand, I’m just not sure the surgery is worth it - not in terms of cost - as I am not an extremely gifted runner. The reality is that if I don’t get the surgery, I’ll never be able to run seriously, and if I can’t do that, it’s not really worth it to run.
Has anyone else been in this position? I should mention that the surgeon would be a sports med guy who successfully does this surgery often.
