Indoors is better if at a gym because most of the particulates are filtered out and it's not raining ash/particulates indoors. If you are at home, not as good.

Probably right. I suppose the air must be better in a building that circulates its air through some sort of filter. I guess that means that if it's smoky outside, I should set my central heating/AC system to "fan only" and run the air through the dust filters, even though neither heating nor cooling is currently required.
Treadmill, do not risk being outside. Think about how much you suck into your lungs during a run--thousands and thousands of liters.
Find a gym that will give you a few days free trial membership.
Dealt with this issue a few times in CO.
I work at UCSF (which is heavily medicine-oriented, so they probably know what they're doing) and the gyms have been closed on some days and places and opened others. The pools have been closed consistently (one of them is open today for the first time), even the indoor ones -- I guess they need more airflow or have worse filters or something.
I can definitely smell and taste the smokey air when I walk outside from the gym, so the gym air must be cleaner. Not sure how it's filtered.
I got through the summer of fire smoke up here in Oregon/Washington, my suggestion is to train normally if AQI is under 120, and just do easy mileage as early in the morning as possible if it's under 200. Stay inside above that.
It was under 100 AQI here in the South Bay and they cancelled all sports. I guess football players can smoke pot and enhale smoke directly but a little smoke outside will kill them.
pfft. just run. the air pollution is worse in india, china, and so much of the rest of the world *every day*. see delhi for instance: http://aqicn.org/city/india/new-delhi/us-embassy/. people still work out.
When in doubt, ask yourself what Pre would do.
The great thing about drugs is that they don't discriminate! Even you can enjoy the wonders of pot. :)
They just announced the gyms will be closed for the next few days. :/
ran a bit on wednesday in Santa Rosa. Like 1.5 miles. Bad move. Felt lousy.
I'm at 2 months in a three month half marathon build. I've simply put it on hold.
Don't train outdoors. Read up on smoke and particulate dangers if you need convincing.
Bike commuted Thursday and Friday, did an easy swim and a track workout Wednesday at super high effort (5k RP)
Didn't feel too bad. All in the south Bay
Similar to LA on a good day
Unless you're old, young, infirm or sensitive to it, it won't put you at much risk. It's hazardous in the sense that smoking cigarettes or getting dental x-rays is hazardous. Just don't go out in smoke all the time for years on end.
If you do run in smoke, you may find the real problem is not being able to sweat efficiently.

Any subject matter expertise on short or long term health impact of working out in these conditions?
I can't believe some of these posts. It's a pretty simple solution for all of you obsessed runners that can't sit out a week and do alternate indoor training like core work, yoga, etc....
Go to a Gym and run on a treadmill. Ask for a trial membership (usually free) or a small fee and run to your hearts content.
Not difficult!!!
AQI in SF in the 30s right now!
I know the fires are still raging, but I guess with the wind it is ok in SF.

My heart goes out to all the people who’ve lost loved ones or their homes. Terrible.
The air quality for the rest of us has gotten much much better today, but for those immediately impacted by the fire... wow... it’s just terrible.
I have asthma that has been greatly controlled with meds. On thursday was the first day of bad air, I could feel it and only ran 3.5 and worked all day and it wore me out!! yesterday was able to get in 10. I check the airnow.gov site before going out. Great info
It's that time of year again. Pretty heartbreaking stuff, and it seems worse than last year.

How are people in LA?
Kids be worried about air quality then light up a joint because it’s “natural”. ?
