I am super happy Galen Rupp won Chicago! I met him on a pre-Chicago Marathon shakeout run outside of the Chicago Hilton and got a picture with him. Some of his speed must have rubbed off on me because I just ran a 2:52 PR by over 17 minutes with a positive split on the 2nd half of only 10 seconds. I saw and took a pic of Hasay training too and I am happy she did so well too!

He could win dozens of marathons, but if they are all around 2:08 and 2:09. He will not be rewarded for it, and will always live in the shadows of Ryan Hall, KK, and possibly even Meb

Rupp likely would have been 3rd in Berlin. Probably 2nd at Worlds behind Boston champ G. Kirui. And looking at the NYC field, he could most likely win that race. So no, Rupp didn't pick a soft race, it's just that he's one of the best marathoners in the world right now.
As for Rupp's win being less impressive than Ritz's 9th (4 minutes behind the winner), well that's your opinion, but it is a strange one.

The win is nice. A win is a win.
But really, it's like he's celebrating a 12.4 100 meter win at the Special Olympics.
Rupp has to go a bit quicker to at least get closer to the men's WR than the women's WR.
I didn't like it when Gatlin won this Summer either. This sport has become the 1998 MLB or the Tour de France of the early 2000's. Kind of entertaining to watch, but you're not really celebrating true sportsmen.

It's strange to think that 2:07:47 is better than 2:09:18 on the same course? That's not my opinion, it's math.
Rupp may turn out to better than Ritz or Hall at the marathon, but so far he has just had better timing.

Quotes like yours are the reason for much of the hate. Over-exaggerated claims just anger people and they start to root against the poor guy. Truth is that he ran for the win: stayed with the pack and then laid down the hammer when he was supposed to. Equally true, however, is that the competition was limited and he has yet to run a great marathon time in his career. Hopefully he progresses to more competitive marathons in future years and improves his times. But if people stopped making ridiculous claims regarding Rupp's historical greatness, I think there would be more supporters hoping that he continues to advance.

2:09 and a win is good. It's not a breakthrough. Hall ran faster, Ritz ran faster in Chicago, and Meb won New York and Boston.
I expect Rupp to improve and run faster than 2:09, but he actually needs to do it before he gets credit for it.
