How'd you do?
How'd you do?
Bump! I want to be right in my guess.
So how was it? Op'.
I didn't meet the op' at the start but it was a great day to run.
I ran 2:26:40 and I don't think I could the intervals the op' posted so I'm very Curious...how he did?
good job, masterblaster! also bumping this.
Unlike the op' I'm slower.,,but 41 years old.
Pr was 2:28:50 coming into chicago.
My mileage was 60-90mpw
All workouts were mp not much faster.
Best workouts were:
1:11:35 half max effort 12 weeks out.
4x5k 5:30 pace 6- 7 weeks out
26x1k 1k 5:30- 1k 6:00
6x2 mile 5:30
Ran a half marathon at pace 1:12:30 at end of a 90 mile week. 4 weeks out.
Ran 2:26:40 chicago and was 1:11:30 at the half.
Great run for me. 2 minute pr' bad pacing but had fun.
Nice work masterblaster. As a 37 year old it gives me hope to see someone setting PRs at 41. What are you going to do with your prize money for winning the masters division?
(Well I'm thinking of using it for a trip to Kenya)
But I will have to pretend the trip was free to chicago.
Prize money will be barely just enough to maybe cover hotel/food/uber. ( $2k) hotel was $1500/probably spent $300-400 over the weekend on food/$50 each way to airport. I had a few taxi/uber rides. I had family with me so my costs were a bit higher than a solo trip.
+Flights/entry/missed 2 days work... were another pretty big expense. $2k
So back at work, but it was awesome!
You couldn't come back to your own thread in just one week?

Those workouts and miles are better than anything I've thrown down before! Assuming that you don't feel burnt out during the taper, I'd say you have something around 2:21 in you. But yeah, the weather looks warm so I'd bet you positive split by 5 minutes :(
- a guy who ran 2:25 at Chicago in perfect conditions a few years ago
Don't wanna be a jack*ss, but honestly... You're pretty optimistic. We probably all know those guys or at least some stories from runners who run mostly easy runs and a couple easy workouts and then throw down ridiculous times but that is the exception and not the norm.
I honestly do no see a single workout that indicates anywhere close to 2:21 for 26.2 miles. 2:21:59 is 5:24 pace and the OP in this 4 weeks never went longer than... well... 3 miles at that pace in one shot.
2:23/2:24 is the best I can see here if the weeks shown are anywhere near some kind of routine and not are just down weeks or the OP is kind of an abnormal talent. Despite that I wish that the OP ran fast and had a nice day out there! :)

If my suspicions are right about the OP's identity, he DNF'd, drank some whiskey the night of the marathon and has shifted his focus to Indy for a quick turnaround.
So?
It was a good day to run.
I hope he posts how he did.
Nothing wrong with failure... most of the time people crash and burn in the marathon regardless to prep. It's a beast. Sometimes less works and sometimes more is better. I agree his build lacked longer mp' runs you have to be able to run 10 miles of pace pretty smoothly if you hope to have a chance.
The first 13 miles are a joke if you are fit, but the last 13' you pretty heavy and the ground gets really hard if your not ready. So the key is smooth for me.

It was a good day to run! I came through the half feeling great, but a tad slow. 1:13:58. Then, had to stop twice during mile 15 for the restroom (GI issues). Gave up and jogged it in after that. Honestly, I don’t even know my exact time but it was 2:38 something which is well off of my 2:30 PR.
Minus the stomach issues, I know I had 2:27-2:28 fitness. Not quite the 2:25 that I wanted though. Just a little more motivation for next time. Sorry I hadn’t updated - I was not very excited. Not too discouraged either though as I know a PR is coming this Spring!
And congrats on your awesome race/masters win!!
Thanks for updating. It would've been easy to bail on the thread altogether. Like master blaster said, no shame in an off day when it comes to the marathon. I'm 0-3 in nailing it (although I was happy with all 3, I never nailed one).
OP - Hey! That's way better than a DNF. Nice job on sticking it through. Are GI issues a common thing for you? I have a theory that folks who stick to very healthy/regimented diets (avoiding beer, chicken wings, nachos and taco bell) are more likely to run into GI issues during the race since handling a gel on their more sensitive stomach can be a challenge. A few poor eating choices every so often can help with getting used to that. Maybe a beer mile here or a cheesy gordita crunch following by an easy 30' run there!
Pikachu - I'm no expert but I've run in the mid 2:20s enough to know what my training looks like when I'm in that kind of shape. I ran 2:25 with peak weekly mileage of 70-90 and the most quality workouts being 7x1k in ~3:08 and 3x3mi in ~16:40. And I don't fall into the "couple easy workouts and then throw down ridiculous times" category. My best 5k is a 15:25. I think the OP has it in him to go much faster than 2:28 on that training on an ideal day.
Personally I'm starting to find that doing Marathon pace workouts that have 10-13 miles of total Marathon Pace work is working and a good indicator.
These are a few miles longer than previous cycles.
Main sessions were:
5x2mi,6x2mi or 4x5k.
I also did the Cornova 24-26K of 1k ON and 1k crusie about 30 seconds ...
It took a few years to build up to these for me. I take pretty short recovery 2-4 minutes after each max. I don't focus on pace just running smooth. I have to be relaxed or I can't hold it for the marathon. These started at 6 minute pace a few years ago and I only did 4x2 max. Now I can hit 5x2mi. at 5:30 pace pretty relaxed when I'm in shape. Not every session is perfect but the goal is being relaxed and smooth.
I'm off the same opinion. Some people overachive, but if you cannot run 10 - 13 miles MP broken up as intervals it might be a hard day come race day.
That being said huge props to the OP for gutting it out. There will come faster days for sure. Wish you good recovery!
This cycle I really liked the 25-26k sessions of 1k pace and 1k cruise.
I think Cornova's philosophy of a "a bit longer or bit harder" for every cycle or workout helps mentally and physically. Just marginally increase the stress either pace or distance.
Even making 4x3 mile 4x5k sounds silly but it's harder.
I've actually had a 5x2mile workout (slightly under MP) on the docket earlier this week, but bagged it after a deciding that some easy recovery days were needed due to illness and a pretty difficult workout on Saturday.
I am considering incorporating the 5x2miles into a 22 mile run this Saturday, likely be my biggest workout with 5 weeks til goal race. Just not sure if this is too much stress for 1 day. Was planning to break it down by 3 miles warm-up, 5x2mile with 1 mile recovery, 4 miles cool down.
Goal marathon time is 2:28-29, so the interval pace would be done in the upper 5:30's. Given the responses on this thread, I figured there are plenty of comparable runners who could weigh in on the feasibility of this. Thanks!
