Just bought and returned the switchback iso. Saucony wont approve my review on their website as its only 2 stars (lol).
Wanted to like it as I like there freedom ISO's, but...
- Too flexy for a real trail shoe. Has NO rock plate and is just a freedom iso with a more rugged outsole. Flexes all around and you can feel the pointy rocks under your forefoot and heel. Just roll a tennis ball and you feel the curves, whereas my altra superiors (with basic rock plate) or speedgoats are more rigid. Now...this may be good for grass running or mild dirt trails but anything halfway technical...forget about it as you'll end up feeling everything and wishing for at least some protection. To call this a "trail" shoe is a stretch - they should really include a rockplate option.
- They cut off the forefoot cushion early towards the toe on this versus the freedom road shoe. (runs all the way to the toe tip). I like the forefoot stack up to my toes, so if you are prone to blisters in this case, you'll get them.
- Found the upper to be too plastic feeling and it creases. Much prefer an engineered mesh fabric upper. Doesn't have the "ahh this fits niiiiice" feel of the road freedom iso's
PROS
- The boa dials worked pretty well though and I like the idea as they lock down well and tend to distribute the pressure evenly on the top of the foot.
- Outsold had plenty of grip
- Super breathable...you can see the color of your socks in them against the black. Should be good for drainage
- Sizing is spot on and the 11.5 is a tad looser than the road version mainly due to the upper as the toe box has a bit more room (both vertically and in width).
