How can you begrudge a young woman a chance to reach her potential? Athletes are supported much better here. Here is a bit of Alice Wright's story, who has given us 5 years at UNM:
"I had a (stress) fracture, and it was just diagnosed in the fall. It took me a long time to recover from that. I was on crutches and lost the year. ... The medical treatment is much better out here. In terms of the training room, you have to pay a lot for that in England. And the MRI, I was injured before I came out here and it took me nearly two years to get an MRI in England. Here, you can get one the next week. If I had known the injury I had, I could have taken just six weeks off. But I missed two years running."
The US benefits from the diversity and talent of foreign athletes just as we due from top academic students. The local students benefit from the diversity of the experience and the example of excellence. Look at the UNM roster, there are plenty of in-state students, they are getting to see what it takes and train with the best. It isn't the 4 or 5 races a year that develops them, but the training.
If you are a fan of distance running, you should have been willing to pay for Alice Wright to come to the US. What would the last two NCAA 10k finals have been without her pushing the pace and making honest races of them. What a gutsy runner! Try to enjoy the sport.
