I saw this coming a mile away yet did nothing.
I am the kids sports manager at a private tennis/golf club. The club has been suffering financially for a couple years but I thought it would hang in there. Today I got notice that they are cancelling all sports programs and I lose my job as of January 1st.
The job is totally niche and also not something that I would like to do again.
So I'll be out on my a$$ as a 31 year old with an arts degree in 3 months. I need a fix for this and I am totally at a lose and devastated :-( I have no real hard skills to speak of. I really really don't want to be working at walmart...
1.) Think about what YOU want to do.
--Make a list.
--Does it involve more schooling?
--Does it involve moving?
2.) Look at your local community college for certification degrees. You can become a plumber, electrician, truck driver, HVAC, etc. in as short as two weeks!
3.) You said you already have a degree in art. Is this something you want to pursue? You didn't say specifically what type of art degree though. I have a buddy who does quite well as a wedding photographer. Lots of free time too! (He supplements it with real estate photos & you can add senior portraits for more money too.)
4.) Don't forget, you're NOT on a timeline here. You will, I believe qualify for unemployment. This will give you more time to figure things out too.
5.) Someone gave a smart aleck answer about teaching. There is a major shortage of teachers in the U.S.!! And, being an art teacher would be a sweet gig! It's an elective. There's no real pressure for standardized testing either. You have summer's off. You could coach too (esp. with your background).
5A.) Getting a teaching certification isn't too bad. It's about 5 classes. Schools will give you a Provisional License while you take classes. Or, if you go the private school route, you won't even need a teaching license.
You never said if you're married or have children. This does change things.
Keep a chin-up, brother!
