As someone who has a WR, I would take the Olympic Gold.

A gold medal is forever.....a world record will not stand forever, just a mark.
Yeah but it's more or less an uber-glorified participation medal. Someone is getting one every four years whether they Rudisha (London) or Centro (Rio) the damn thing...
There is so much more luck/circumstance involved winning a gold than setting a WR.
Gold

Can't hang a world record on the wall.
Nor give it to your kids

False. Guinness gives you a certificate for a world record, so yes, you can hang it on the wall and yes, you can give it your kids.
Yes, Komen's 3000 is the strongest record in the book, followed by Bekele's 5k.
Would you rather have the career of Fernando Mamede or Carlos Lopes?
WR or Oly gold is an interesting debate and I tend to think I'd prefer gold, but it just depends. I'd take Lopes' career of Mamede's, but I'd also take Cram's WR record and career over Peter Rono's Oly gold and career.

Haha
I guess IAAF gives you a big charity sized cheque. So could put that up if you have a large wall?
GOLD medal no doubt. Wear that baby around free drinks for life without saying a word.

Disagree about the street cred. Former World Record Holder sounds heavier than Former Olympic Champion. One says you were fast, the other says you were lucky.
You are never a "Former" Olympic champion (unless your medal was taken away for doping). You should always be addressed as Olympic Gold Medalist or (YEAR) Gold Medalist_________.
Give me the gold!
A WR is more meaningful to me because as a hobby jogger discussing running I tend to talk more about PRs than about my competition on any given day.
I also feel kind of down on myself when I win a race -- I just figure the competition was weak.
But world records stand across all competitions so I'd rather have one of those.
With some exceptions -- my gym teacher had a WR for a month or two in some weird distance (indoor 400 yards for women or something) right after the event began. I'd rather have a gold in a new&obscure event than a WR in the same.
WR in the London marathon dressed as a pumpkin? Not impressed.
Olympic gold is greater. Well until the improved drug test in 6 years invalidate it...
Only a big-time loser would choose a gold medal over a world record. Do you want to be praised like a dog with a golden collar for doing something right or would you rather ACCOMPLISH SOMETHING INHERENTLY GREATER? Look at my preshous. I'm so preshous. LOL. Sad, the lack of critical thinking and insecurity people have in this thread. Big-time sad.

No gold for the great pumpkin so your argument is invalid. But if I could be the Great Pumpkin I would definitely choose that.

"Insecure People-Pleaser and Great Attention Monger."
This can go along with your gold medal.
Olympic Gold. Unless my world record could be the first sub 2 hour marathon (on a legit course, of course).
The majority of times, you don't hit the podium being "clean". This is a known fact.
What should be anti doping is actually pro doping.
Look what the Gold Medal did for Bruce Jenner. Well, just the first part--I really don't want to turn into my grandmother like he did. Even then, if I have to lop off my man bits just to win a Gold Medal, I'd probably do it. Lop off your junk=Gold MedalRemove one testicle=7 Tour de France TitlesHmmmm, looks like to me that the TdF is pretty cheap price to pay. I guess I'm going to only remove one of the boys and see how this next season works out.

Who won the 5000m gold medal at 1996 Olympics (no googling here)? Who holds the 5000m WR?
Case closed.
A good thread would actually be: what Gold medals in track and field were also WR's? (And vice versa.)
