If you ever intend to double it's best to start right away at low miles. You get used to the habit rather than feeling like you're adding it when you already feel maxed out at 80.
It's really a personal preference. For me, I can only get in one run a day, so doubling really complicates things. I would rather do one 8 mile run than one 4 mile run and a skipped 4 mile run double because I couldn't fit it in that day. I would be hard pressed to get my weekly mileage goal if I skipped one of my 4 mile double. I agree that getting into the habit is a great idea, but not everyone can accommodate two runs in their daily schedule. I think the point is that you don't really NEED to start doubling until your mileage gets higher. Can you? Sure, but there is also a minimum stimulus that needs to be achieved and if you are below that minimum just so you can double kind of defeats the purpose. I have seen kids "double" 1.5 in the morning and 1.5 in the afternoon. This does very little. A solid 3 or 4 mile run as a single is much better than 2 junk runs. For me, a 4 mile run (30 min) is the minimum I will run. I just don't see that anything less than that benefits me.
Oh, and if you are doing 60 mpw with a true long run, you won't be doing 10 per day. 16 long run, 12 on your tempo day, and about 8 the other 4.
