I agree with your narrative. I feel that rupp is highly overrated. However, kipchoge, no matter what shape he was in, would not have run 2:03 on that course. Marathoners don't run fast times in the olympics, mainly due to the course. And to my understanding, kipchoge kept telling rupp and Feyisa "don't worry, guys,i'm not going to take off yet." And then he took off at around the 6 mile mark, and really pushed it. So he didn't not run the entire race below his max

HE could have run around 2:05 or 2:06 on that day, but no way hell would he have run 2:03 on that course.

I like rupp for what he is : America's best hope at finishing top 10 in marathons, but that is about it. All this talk of taking down africans and blazing 2:04 is complete nonsense.

Rupp will run sub 2:08 in Chicago. Book it.

Of course Kipchoge was just cruising - I think we all agree there, but no he would not have ran 2:03 high. And 2:07 high at Chicago WITHOUT PACERS would be very solid - likely solid enough FTW. And you keep referring to Rupp's 2:09 PB at Boston - in humid, 75 degree weather! Put a lot of these E Africans out there on that day and what will you get? DNF, DNF, and DNF - we've seen it a million times in Boston.

Is Rupp a 2:04 guy? Unlikely. Is Rupp a 2:07 high guy at best as you say? Unlikely. The answer probably lies somewhere in between, but we'll never really know until he signs up for a London/Berlin/Dubai time trial....

wanjiru wasnt as bada$$ as kipchoge and ran 2:06 in the olympics. eluids slowest TIME besides rio is a 2:05:30

trust me he could have run 2:03:50's at rio if he had to, but he ran EASY till he wanted to drop the hammer, i mean he was crusing 5 min mile pace, thats 2:11, then his last 7 miles he dropped the hammer and hit 5 of those last miles average at 4:36 which is 2:00:36 pace. but yeah your right he was only good for a 2:05-6....again you guys are f*cking idiots. you do realize he ran a 2:03:05 before rio?

runs 2:11 pace for 19 miles, then drops the hammer to low 2:00 pace and you think all he was good for that day was 2:05-6? he damn near ran that anyways from dropping 4:36 per mile at the END.

I was busy doing stuff yesterady so wasn't really on the site. I've glanced threw the the thread and want to comment on a few things posters have said.

Your thought that Rupp could maybe run sub 59 for the half isn't crazy if you look at stats. He's #15 all time in the 10,000 and 16 men have broken 59 for 13.1.

But and this is a big but - it assume he's as good at 13.1 at 10,000. And then you are extrapolating all the way to the marathon. It's basically physiologically impossible for someone to be as good at the mile as the marathon. The question for Rupp is what's his best event. I always assumed it was the longer stuff but that was before he started ripping off 3:50 miles.

Ok. I'll admit I laughed my but off when I read your post. But there is one thing that's absurd in it. Rupp is'nt a "28 low guy natural". I don't believe that.

My brother was a low-28 guy. And while we may not if Rupp is clean, I'd bet he'd admit that he'd think Rupp was naturally better than 28 low.

Now, to kichopge. His PB is 2:03.05, and he did that in london, the second fastest marathon course out of the big 6 marathons. And he was cranking it hard in that race. So you mean to tell me that he would have equaled that on a slow course during the olympics?? No way. 2:05 would have been his fastest ON THAT COURSE. period.

so from 19-20 he was mid to low 28 guy, the makes a huge drop and maintains for 3 yrs, then another big drop, then a HUGE drop, then back to mid 27s, then a huge drop then to low 27s, then boom back to 28 lows

well convert 28:18 to seconds, 1698, then multiply by .05 or 5%,= 84.9

now 1698-84.9 = 1613.1, now convert back to minutes

26.885, now convert the .885 to seconds, 26:53.1

now isnt that something. go backwards from his 26:44.36

1604.36x.05 =80.21, add 80.21 to 1604.36 = 1680.21, convert back to minutes, comes out to damn near 28:00 flat.

Yes, he ran his last miles at that pace because he was conservative before that pace, which is my point. Had he went out like he did in london or for a fast marathon, he wouldn't have not have been running at that pace for the last 7 miles.

WE agree to disagree. Wanjiru ran 2:06, correct, which is not 2:03. And his situation does not indicate what Kipchoge situation would have been. 2 different situations, 2 different runners.

Kipchoge wouldn't have run 2:03 or 2:04 anything. The fact that Wanjiru holds the Olympic record at 2:06, should tell you that fast, fast marathons don't occur like they do at london or berlin, because the olympic courses are usually slow courses....which you are not taking in consideration.

Hell, kipsang ran 2;09 at the london olympics, and he is a 2;03 guy, and former record holder. HE RAN 2:09 and came in third.

Kipchoge wouldn't have run faster than 2:05, and I don't think he would have done that, but I'm stretching it.
