Son got injured at XC practice doing suicides in the gym. My first question is why are XC kids doing suicides in the gym. Any other XC coaches on here do suicides with their students?

Wow I've never heard of this one before. Sounds like the bball coach is implementing some crazy training.
Injured how?
Were they warmed up? I'm guessing probably not, which is why she got hurt.
Schools are so bad weather averse these days, is that why she was in the gym?
Unless you have been playing full-court hoops a few days a week, suicides will blow out highly fit distance runners. Not a bad thing, just a new exercise for the body to adapt. Do a bunch of suicides on short rest and there will be a stimulus. Maybe that's all the coach was shooting for, given weather/too many numbers/etc.

Obviously a troll, but happy to take the bait.
My first question is, "have you asked the coach?" You might consider seeking out the source of your frustration. Act like an adult.

Very few coaches actually do the workouts alongside the kids, mostly they just coach.

Not trolling there Jeffy, asking because I never heard of XC runners doing suicides. I will be talking to the coach today about not having him do them.
I don't see anything wrong with suicides for XC. Esp if htere is weather.
explosive speed is important for starts, hills and kicking. And changing things up is good mentally.
max heart rate work is a basic element of running training.

Don't be that guy. Just tell your son to warmup and to beat just 1 other kid always. There's a time to dog the coach and a time to dog the workout.
We were inside using the gym one day and i was lining kids up for plyos and sprints and they asked if we where doing suicides lol. This isnt basketball and Heck no! Was my response!
Have you considered taking the coach to back of the school, and settling your disagreement like men? Just a thought.

Maybe you should ask WHY they are doing them and have a substantiated reason why they should NOT be doing them before requesting he end the practice.

If your son didn't do his summer training I don't see why you're surprised he got injured at practice. Preparation is important when going into the season IMO.
HS coach, 8th grade coach? I understand the frustration of having a coach who doesn't really know how to train distance runners.
Couple options- grin and bear it. Your child is getting some workouts in and part of a team.
Try to work in some fitness that you know your child is not getting. A Sunday long run or something. Hills. Etc.
As for suicides. Not a traditional xc workout but a workout that has gains as mentioned before.
Ideally, your kid has a solid coaching regimen by his junior year to prep him for a shot at college xc scholarships.
I had a mediocre xc coach all through hs and was more motivated and informed than the coach to excel, and was lucky enough to punch my own ticket to college without him.

There are much better ways to improve everything you mention in a manner that is more sport specific for XC than suicides. What is wrong with the standard training methods for developing pace shifting/hill running ability?
As an XC coach I can say sometimes with the kids we do agility or short, quick explosive work. The reason is that when we train kids for running, all of their movement is going forward, only in one plane. It is good to get some of that lateral movement (side to side) as well as some shorter explosive movement to make sure the athletes are not neglecting any part of their fitness. But, like someone else said, if you are concerned, just ask the coach.

Genuine question: what is a "suicide"?
