One thing that prodigies run into that I haven't seen specifically discussed is, what happens when other kids simply catch and surpass you because they develop physically and have more talent to begin with? This of course is aimed at the boys' side.
In Colorado there's a kid who's starting his junior year. He ran 35:57 at age 10 and 35:33 at age 11 at the Boulder Boulder 10K, not an easy course and situated at 5,300'+. Also ran a 5:00 mile at age 10. At age 14 he ran 35:58 at the same 10K. All throughout middle school his parents took him all over the state and country to win things, and he did win a lot and raced almost constantly. Mountains track roads skis.
Now he is half done his high school career. I just checked and as soph in track he ran 2:04, 4:36, 9:54 (all altitude). Very respectable but clearly whatever domination the boy showed as a preteen is long gone. Seems unlikely he will ever run close to 30 flat on the track in college.
I do not think he has "burned out" in the sense of injuries or physical woes, like I said he has basically never stopped racing in about seven years that I know of. But it has to be hard to be celebrated as the kid who beats almost all the grownups when you are like half their size, only to later become the kid who doesn't come close to beating all the kids. He was not top 50 in the state for 3200. I have to think at some point the kid is like "This ain't nearly as fun when I am seeing so many more backs now and some are younger than mine."
OP was full of shit but the topic is interesting
