That's an aerobically equivalent pace. Most people are undertrained, so they run comparatively worse as they move up in distance, but if you're well trained, then 6:10 is a very realistic marathon pace for a 17 minute 5k runner. I know many who have done it.
Agree - I've run a 2:49 marathon (so, sub-6:30) but have a lifetime 5K PR of 17:17. The season I ran that marathon, I didn't get any faster than probably 17:30. Right now I'm sitting with a season best of 17:37 for the 5K and targeting 6:30 pace on the nose for my fall marathon. 17:04 should net you a fair bit faster if you're trained up properly.
