meet cancelled because of lack of sponsors
along with cologne ( RIP in ?last decade ) this was the greatest non-golden-4/golden-league/diamond-league meet, this is end of an era as i don't see it coming back as now 2y of cancellation
a few WRs there
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rieti_Meeting
but so many many more great runs
here are some non-WR performances there that stick in memory
- Maree crushing coe in 3'48.8 in '81 - ovett's first circuit loss over 1500/mile in 3 or 4y
- coe running 3'29.77 in '86 when looked washed up after thrashing by cram in stuttgart 1500
- benson koech a 19y ole kenayn who ran contemptously easy 1'43.1 in '94 & looked to be future of 800 running, better than anyone else at the time, including guy called Kipketer, but sadly Koech had injury ruined career
- Kipketer running 1'41.83 in '96 there which told us he was robbed of gold in atlanta, banned because of politics - all on tired legs after some frequent runs in past few weeks & just 44 hours after a 1'43.3 in brussels !!!, not even a WR attempt i believe but worked out well that day & wouda got wr if he'd skipped brussels but he was never going to do that
- hicham in '02 was out to run 3'24+ !!! - he split an incredible 2'44.75 at 1200, by far the fastest 1200 ever but faded to 3'26-high
he lamented he never had pacing to at least bell & his "concentration" wavered being alone out there for so long
- baala, a 1500 runner who'd never run a serious 800 in his life forced to a 1'43.1 !!! in '02, showing what an elite 1500 guy can run for 800 if they really try & follow pacer
i'll see if any more come to mind...
