I just saw that

similar thing happens to cyclists, iliac artery entrapment. it can be operated on, but most cyclists aren't quite the same afterwards as they were before it developed.

Anyone following Kate's spectacular high school career, and seeing video interviews, will know that she's a well-spoken, no-hype, respectful, and highly intelligent soul. Likeable to the max, which makes it really easy to root for her. To see her stumble like this, on the cusp of an Oregon athletic career and the potential for greater success on teams of champions, is especially sad. Let's hope she isn't like those cyclists who allegedly - allegedly - don't bounce back fully after the operation.

I bet there are plenty of post-op success stories. Plenty. Kate, we're pulling for you all the way! Why not envisage a complete recovery, followed by a rise to the top of the collegiate running world, and then some?

Simply not true. I have a number of friends who are or have been pro triathletes or pro cyclists. The condition develops in a percentage of athletes from the positional "crimping" that cycling causes to the iliac artery. I know one former ITU world champion who had to have the iliac artery surgery mid-career and returned to elite professional level for several more years in her pro career.

WRONG, Marcus Welbybreath. One thing even a quack doctor can do is diagnose you as a troll and a coward.

Besides, only quack gastroenterologists don't give a crap about their patients.

Kate, if you're reading this, we are cheering for you! Sorry your collegiate career is starting this way, but may it just be a bump on a very long road full of even more spectactular views of the sport than what you have already wittnessed.

Actually, she wasn't out during the XC season in '16 ... it was about mid indoor season when things turned south. She ran a good (if not quite up to her standards) leg on Lake Braddock's DMR team that broke the national record in January.

I only worry that now we might see what a powerhouse track school does with this dilemma of someone I am sure is on a substantial scholarship? There small schools with a focus on distance running seem to show much more patience than the Oregon's of the world!

Indoor running has always caused quite a few injuries.

In what world do you get popliteal artery entrapment syndrome from indoor running?

You don't even have proof she runs on an indoor track a lot. Most kids don't have access and just practice outside most of the winter. Only racing on an indoor track every couple of weeks for a race is not going to give you an injury. The mere act of running an indoor season doesn't injure you. Especially an abbreviated one in her case.

Even if there were proof that running a lot on an indoor track might enhance such an issue, last winter was so mild that it is unlikely teams ran much indoor even if they had access.

I had the loss of coordination thing long before it became a 'thread' on letsrun - back in 1984.

I had a diagnosis of popliteal artery entrapment as well. Had surgery to 'explore' and determine. What a waste. No Bueno. No issue, but lots of dead nerves behind my knee after a VERY invasive surgery - 9 inch scar behind my knee plus up on the inside thigh and down on the outside calf.

Didn't do anything.

How long ago? Exploratory surgery is not something connected to this diagnosis. Diagnostic imaging is the tool used.

She'll have the surgery and be back training full speed 2-4 weeks.

Thought I saw on Facebook in a group somewhere that she had the surgery on both knees about a month ago and is just starting to run again (underwater and on land). Keeping my fingers crossed for her, the girl's got so much talent and drive
