Paul Swangard has no business on these telecasts. He is beyond incompetent. I don't care if he is a good guy or has a background in track and field. Swangard makes Rick Allen look like the greatest commentator of all time in comparison.
This is the second time this season I've watched a men's 1500m race with Paul Swangard absolutely paralyzed to identify one of the leaders during the final lap. If you are so lazy and inept than you can't differentiate any of the Kenyans from each other, then take a seat in the restroom while the race is being run. We don't need you behind the mike.
During that Diamond League race earlier this summer Swangard was so bewildered he didn't name a single runner during the final 15 seconds of the race. This time he had no clue who the leaders were so he desperately looked well back for anyone he could identify, and naturally that was the white guys like Wightman and Ingebrigtsen. Kiprop stands out so Swangard was able to name him.
Finally Todd Harris came to the rescue by at least being able to identify Cheruiyot as the leader and eventual winner with about 50 meters to run.
If Swangard had been solely in charge no doubt we never would have heard Cheruiyot's name, well not until perhaps 5 seconds after the finish.
Todd Harris should be given a chance in the full time play by play role. He was used in that capacity in the recent swimming world championships and fared surprisingly well, including noticeable improvement as the meet went on. At least he studies the athletes and can pick out who is moving into contention and who is dropping back. Harris and Boldon teamed effectively today during the opening women's 400m hurdles.
But when you stick Paul Swangard in the supporting role and expect any help during a race, you're not going to get it. He apparently cares about Oregon athletes and nobody else. If the world looked like Oregon, Paul Swangard would be fine.
