My parents divorced when I was 7. My Dad did well, but my mother never made much money. I basically had a pretty solidly middle class upbringing. Drove a crappy family hand me down car and wore clothes from TJ Maxx. I did get to go to private school and my Dad paid for college. But that more had to do with schooling being infinitely more affordable back in the 80s. After college, my Dad helped pay my bills for a while. My Dad also loaned me $8,000 for a down payment on a home, which was really just an advance on the Obama tax credit during the housing crisis.
Compared to some of my private school friends, I have had very little advantage in life. Many of my private school friends rode on their parents' coat tails into elite colleges as legacies and then into high paying corporate jobs. Others started successful businesses with seed money from Mom and Dad. I never had anything like that.
But compared to most people, I had a lot of advantages. My parents went to top colleges and valued education. My parents were always there to back me up if I ran out of money or got in trouble. I was then able to take risks in life that I would not have had I not had anyone who could catch me if I failed.
