The difference is that we can be certain that Sandy covered all those miles on foot herself.

Pete's Gold Standard proves it self. Anyone trying to do a record transcon should be prepared to follow that standard.
Sandy won Badwater 2017 by catching up to and passing more established runners. The same thing happened with the transcon. Sandy outlasted the competition. As Zwitty has stated, that is Sandy's trademark: slow but steady and keep on going. Sandy only got off pace the last 70 miles.
